Albert’s home WIP

I like it! Reminds me a little of the house from Up. But the idea of Albert and the family both connecting from being outsiders is great.
The house already has a personality present, just from this sketch. Excited to see where you go from here! -
@Justin-Moss Thank you! Maybe if I take ou the balloons?
-
@mag Do balloons enter into your story? If so, leave them! They add a whimsical touch and give movement.
I didn't think of the movie "Up", I thought of Virginia Lee Burton's classic picture book from the 1940s, "The Little House." (which like Up, is a bit of a downer when it comes to the city growing up around a house...the house escapes the city. The message given is that life is better in the country...which doesn't really reflect today's world, as more and more people live in urban settings.)
Don't let those two associations (The Little House and Up) discourage you because your illustration tells a unique story: your house plans to STAY in the city. The house is holding its own, isn't intimidated by its surroundings, which gives your illustration a very positive vibe. Having the front steps assertively come right onto the sidewalk helps this.
I like how you have the light coming from behind. It lights the illustration in an interesting way, while letting us know that the house's lot is open to the street behind. It will be fun to see the reflections in this illustration!

@RachelArmington yes, I was also going to say I really like the lighting from behind. Even from just the sketch I can feel the heat of a warm summer evening as the sun is getting low behind the tall buildings
-
@Justin-Moss @neschof @RachelArmington thank you all for your comments. I thought I could replace the balloons with a kite, but then again really like their movement, and the fact one of them is getting lost in the city...
Here’s progress with the sketch. Hope I’ll make it on time!

work in progress
I'm really enjoying painting in the light and everything. That's what I love about these monthly challenges - one can work on something totally new and different!
-
This looks beautiful in colour. Wow
-
@geekinm thanks!
And here it is finished.
-
I love the chartreuse car...the illustration would be so different if it were just a line of purple grey cars parked there. Then I realized, maybe that's the car belonging to Albert's family?
-
@RachelArmington yes, exactly! I wanted it to look different and to have a similar feel as the house so they (the car and the house) look like they belong to each other.
-
@mag The color choices are stunning!
-
I love this!

Love it! Great color pallet and paint style, my work is too tight. I know this is your final but the only thing I would try is have a single balloon tied to him. It would draw the eye down to him and add to his looking up pose. Great job!
