Is Caran d'Ache Luminance Colored Pencils much better than other brands?
-
Question for those who like trying out different art supplies.
Just wonder if anyone has tried Caran d'Ache Luminance Colored Pencils, what is its difference from other brands?
It is over $5.4 per pencil, while other decent ones, such as Faber-Castell Polychromos Pencils cost only $2 each.Worth buying a whole set?
Thanks!

@idid I bought a set with a gift card and have not found them that much better than prismacolor. I mean, they are smooth and buttery but not $4 a pencil worth. I have not tried the Faber castell but I have heard they are nice and better than prismacolors

Ask @mrsdion she does beautiful color pencil work

@idid I don't think they're that different than the Polychromos. I have a few of them, just to supplement my Prismacolors with colors I wasn't able to find.

I am using a set of Caran D’ache pastel pencils, very satisfied with it. I’m fascinated by how the colors are blendable and easy to layer. Even when you build the color up in multiple layers, the pastels stay vibrant. It is a stash of lightfast pigments, thereby preserving the richness of color.

For pastel pencils, I've tried Derwent and Faber, but Caran d'Ache is my favorite. I just use them for under drawings though. And I don't use pastels as much as I'd like anyway because they are such pains to store. I've taped some to the walls just because I'm too lazy to frame them. @Enholm-Molly , what kind of paper are you using for your pastels? I love Canson Mi-Teintes.. You could run a truck over that paper and it would still have tooth.

@RachelArmington Yes, Mi-Teintes is a great paper. I consider this the best paper for chalk pastels because they are acid-free and our artworks did not fade after a few years behind conservation glass. You can never go wrong with Canson, a brand which I’m sure every artist knows.
