Book dummy submission

  • Hello all

I have spent the last few months creating a book dummy. I was wondering if anybody had a advice on the submission process?

@Ryan1106 awesome! What’s your book about?

@Ryan1106 Hey Ryan. Well done creating your book dummy. From my experience, to submit a picture book idea, what the publisher will need is a finished front cover, a colour spread and your amazing manuscript. Good luck with your story!

  • I have never done book dummy submission before. Based on talking to other illustrators, I get the sense of this: it depends on your relationship with the editors. If you have worked with them before, you need to think about what is the best way for them to understand your story idea based on past work experience with the editors.

If you have never worked with any of the editors you plan to submit, then you probably need to be more prepared - the dummy sketches need to be a bit more refined. I have heard normally you submit the entire dummy with rough sketches to show the story concept and flow, and you make 1-2 spread sort of final, to show the art style you are going for. Some artists also submit a character sheet to show the main character in different emotions.

I will be meeting with an editor to talk about my story ideas sometime later this month. My plan was to do a quick pitch for 3-4 stories, each story with 2-3 sentences and one image or two. I am working with the editor on another book (Not written by me) now, so we have some collaborating experience. I figured I can discuss with her about my story concepts before I go make a full dummy.

Hello Judy, I was wondering what you meant by a color spread?

  • SVS OG

@Ryan1106 Hey Ryan. A colour spread is a double page spread which is an example page of what the illustrations of the story will look like. Here is an example from a story I wrote. You can add text if that works or leave it off.
