Old and new WIP. Criticisms most appreciated.

So I'm trying to figure out values before I start adding colour, and I wanna add a LOT of detail. Is more detail in the value study kind of stage better? Or is it better to figure out basic values and then add detail after you've added colour?
Any and all suggestions and critiques are most appreciated as I work through this
(edit) I've only really started detailing the little girl's face. Everything else is still kinda rough.

This is looking really cool. Your characters have a lot of personality. I think the overall values are working pretty good and the characters are nicely silhouetted, but perhaps her mechanical arm could stand out a bit more by darkening the guys arm behind it and perhaps uping the contrast in the mechanical arm itself. Right now I feel it is getting a little lost, and it looks like it's supposed to be one of the main focal points.
As far as adding details now or later, I think it's fine to add them later as long as you aren't destroying your overall value patterning you've established. If you were to squint at your image or blur it in photoshop after you've added your details, the values should still appear very similar to the values in your study.

@art-of-b Liking this a lot! Grandpa Borg is taking care of it!! Really cool.

Thank you and thanks very much for the advice. I tried zooming out and squinting and the girl's arm is getting a little lost. I think I'll take your advice and darken the grampa's arm to up the contrast a little.

Thank you very much

Did a bit of work. Slowly working from left to right. This kind of thing takes WAY more time than I'm used to.
