What are groups? (up at the top, the button left of the magnifying glass)

OK, since this forum is new we're all pretty new here, so maybe nobody knows the answer to this. I see an option at the top called "groups" but there is nothing there when I click on it. I'm curious about what it is for. Does anyone know?
