Brainstorming and Sketching for August HTFYA
-
Hey everyone! I haven’t submitted to the newly formatted HTFYA yet, and I want to get in on the action. I’m aiming for August’s deadline, which follows the prompt: SAM WOKE UP TO FIND THAT NOTHING MADE SENSE. SHE WENT OUTSIDE AND EVERYTHING WAS WEIRD! BUT EVERYONE WAS ACTING LIKE IT WAS NORMAL!
Before I even start sketching, I thought I’d share some of my concepts that I’m coming up with and see what y’all think. Anyone else is welcome to join me on this thread, although I’m mainly doing it for myself.
I’ll list my ideas, and then sketches as they come, as replies below.
-
Idea #1: Instead of clouds in the sky, there are enormous jellyfish. Very beautiful, but also weirdly foreboding.
Sam is close-up in the foreground facing away from the viewer and is silhouetted against the sky. She is wearing a megalodon t-shirt and an ocean-themed charm bracelet, hinting at some connection between her and the jellyfish phenomenon. In the background, you can barely see kids playing 4-square and a postman making deliveries as if nothing strange is happening.
-
Idea #2: Everyone is wearing birds nests on their heads.
Sam is standing on the steps of a townhouse facing us looking utterly perplexed as all sorts of people walk by in front of her with every kind of bird perched in a nest on their heads. She’s side-eyeing a bluebird next to her on a railing who seems to say “So… are we together?”
-
Idea #3: Kids and grownups have swapped places.
A cue of grownups lines up for the school bus driven by a bored-looking kid. A toddler is mowing the lawn, and little boy is leaving for work with a briefcase. An old lady rides a tricycle, and a little girl is delivering the mail.
-
Idea #4: The ground is literally lava.
Kind of a cliche idea. Would be pretty difficult to illustrate with people just going about their business, but maybe could be fun.

@Sarah-VanDam I honestly don't think I've seen anyone other than pixar's inside out do "the floor is lava" so could be cool to see
