WIP HTFYA Flight
-
Hey Friends, this is my sketch for HTFYA flight. Just curious about what you think I could improve before I move to the next stage?
Thanks for any feedback.

@MerryMary I really like the concept of your illustration! The expression on the chickens face is funny. Watch out for tangents near the edges of the image. The wing of the plane and the birds on the right come RIGHT up to the edge of the paper. A good rule of thumb to avoid this is to either have it trimmed off, or move the objects a bit further in. Experiment with some tiny thumbnails to try new compositions. Can't wait to see the final.

@MerryMary I would second @MarcRobinson's comments.
And I would add that, I'm not sure what's happening with the geese in the middle plane. It appears to be a mangled mess of birds and it's hard to read which bird is pushing away another. It also looks like there's a 3rd goose head that doesn't connect to a body.
You might also want to look at some Air Plane references so that you can decorate the plane in a more interesting way.
If you keep this angle, you could try and add some interesting elements way below on the ground, like a road, farm, city scape, etc. and then compose those elements in the picture to direct the eye back to the geese and the chicken.
Below is a draw over of your composition and where my eyes go. You might consider changing the geese to create a circular rhythm to the piece (see below).
You can see a blue oval which circles around the piece. You don't have to use this, this is a rushed example, but you can take advantage of the birds wings and long necks to create a rhythm in the piece.
Hope that's helpful!

@MarcRobinson thanks so much! I appreciate the advice, and will work on that.
-
@alexw good Ideas! Thank you, I will take all of that into consideration as I rework my sketch.
-
@MerryMary Fun idea. Great start.
Another fun tweak might be to flip the piece. Then, left to right, you read:
- Geese
- Their flight is interrupted
- By a funny chicken flying a plane
-
@KevinTreaccar that's an interesting idea, I'll definitely flip it and see how it looks comparitively thanks!

Alright here is my piece! I feel pretty happy about how it turned out overall. I tried out a few different things and was able to make some positive changes that made the piece a bit better. Thanks again!
