Is anyone doing folktale week?
-
@Mia-Clarke Yeah I have good intentions for so many things I want to do I get overwhelmed with all the possiblities sometimes. OMG.. If I could write a novel about the crazy artist brain, I would...
Your Glow submission is stunning just had to tell you
-
@ArtistErin Thank you! That makes me happy to hear.

I am, sorta... I found it too late, and didn't truly understand the idea behind it. I bought StoryCamp Disco's guidebook package, and now I'm kinda in awe... I'm going to respond to some of the prompts like I would a normal "prompt word challenge" like so many others, but reading the guide illuminated so many deep rabbit holes to explore and contemplate. I really look forward to next year, when I can do it right/better and give it the time it deserves.
I won't be able to post these in a timely fashion, but I relish the opportunity to let them nest in my brain and heart for a while. Since I'm behind, I'm just going to let these happen when they happen.
Here are my first two.

Folktale week Day 5 Costume
My rendition of Rumplestiltskin And his costume of gold... I used to dream of finding a little magic elf
-
Folktale week - Potion Aphrodite contemplating her incredible magnetism and power with the potion she uses.
Sometimes I like creating just for the beautiful reason, and I don't need a story to follow or a prompt to adhere to. I love character creating this way... wish I could adapt this same energy to everything I do.

I loved looking through everyone else's entries! I'm doing Folktale week too, and I used the opportunity to write my own "folktale" and do picture book style illustrations for it. I'm practicing designing around type. I'm all done except for the last image...which I'm procrastinating by poking around on the forum instead of painting it! I'll share my final after I get it done. The full text of the story is on my Instagram account with my posts. @kirsten.mcgonigal.art

Folktale Week Day 7 Victory
The classic tale of Cinderella, in her beauty and grace, makes her way to the Royal Ball in splendor, capturing the eye of all in amazement...
Her victory is assured, despite all the odds stacked against her. No matter how difficult and impossible life appeared in the moment, she learned to trust her dream and from this place all things are possible...
My inspiration for this piece comes from the place in my childhood world, dreaming of wearing a magical gown and riding in a magical pumpkin coach...
-
@ArtistErin your illustrations are lovely, they have a real nostalgic feel to them!
-
@ArtistErin This is so beautiful! It looks like it belongs in a classic fairy tale book.
-
@Rachel-Horne Thank you! I love that is reading clearly! It's very intentional... I appreciate your insight
-
@kirsten-mcg Thank you Kirsten! I love that Spent so much of my childhood poring over books, Childcraft, my Dad's art books from school, and now Insta and Pinterest... I'm always inspired by your stuff, thinking about writing, after seeing your folktale SOOO fun!!!
-
@ArtistErin thank you! Iβm finally getting around to posting the end of it on here lol!

Finally getting around to posting my last Folktale Week image. This one is better than the version I posted on Instagram since after posting I noticed all the flaws lol!
-
@ArtistErin @kirsten-mcg Your Folktale Week entires are beautiful! They have this old fairytale feel to them, I love it!
I actually forgot about Folktale Week this year and saw it on Instagram way too late I wanted to participate, but there wasn't enough time (I was also already working on another project). But I made some plans and sketches, perhaps I'll still get to finish them one day. Or I will come back to the characters I came up with next year -
@mzameckaart Thank you soo much!!! I saw @kirsten-mcg talking about it and figured out I do best if I have deadlines, and knew I needed something to keep driving me. I drew each prompt ahead of time only because I didn't have anything pressing...
I heard Will, Jake and Lee say to be project oriented instead of individual image oriented, when it comes to developing portfolio. I dunno, what are your thoughts?
-
@kirsten-mcg NICE!!!
-
@kirsten-mcg Love it Kirsten... I love your palette!! And your movement... Phenomenal.
-
@mzameckaart I feel like unfinished sketches and ideas like youβre talking about are like project seeds. They are the perfect remedy to have on hand when you experience art block!
-
@ArtistErin thank you! I honestly really struggled with the colors on this one, so Iβm happy to hear I found a palette that works well!
