Well since there won’t be another prompt for some time I figured I’d have a go at last months. I just recently signed back up for a years worth of svs fun and learning and can’t wait to see what’s in store for this year. Please feel free to critique and question my work in progress and I’m sure I’ll be asking for help here and there as well! Here is my rough sketch any thoughts? I’m wondering if the mer folk in red is needed or if it’s too crowded…

This is such a cool image!

it took me a minute to figure out but is he using the star to lure them in? At first I thought he was holding it up and there were trying to get it back. Maybe adjusting the silhouette will help? It it'll be clearer as you go.

I think the red mermaid is fine! I would just move her a little closer to one of the fish, maybe even lower down on the right so she's not perfectly art a diagonal to the other mermaid and has uneven spacing between her and the other fish.

Excited to see The next version!

@carlianne thanks for the feedback! Yes it’s a lure, a bit ominous and unfortunate for the mer folk, but that’s the idea. I will move the red mermaid around a bit see if I can create a better composition. As for the silhouette, I think when I move to color, the intention will read better. Proper lighting can drastically affect the mood, I just hope I can hit it!

So as a whole I didn’t really feel the illustration, but I fell in love with the mermaids, so I split them up and posted them in dec virtual studio, if you want to check them out!
