How specific should my portfolio be?
-
So I’m working on my children’s book portfolio but I’d also really love to middle reader and YA work. Should I have a book illustration portfolio that encompasses them all or one portfolio for each?
-
@Griffin there are several illustrators who illustrate both picture books and middle grade/chapter books. Take a look at websites of successful working illustrators -- how do they organize their portfolios? (Hint: they make it easy for art directors/clients to find what they're looking for.)
Here are a few:
-
John Rocco's website -- he organizes his book page and has two different gallery (portfolio) tabs to separate his picture book and middle grade styles.
-
LeUyen Pham illustrates picture books, chapter books, and graphic novels -- her website's home page is more complicated but keeps everything organized.
-
Kirbi Fagan's website has her portfolio on the home page, organized by graphic novel, picture book, and so on.
Hope you find this helpful.

So helpful! Thank you!

@Griffin hi! I’d recommend separating them. Have 1 page for the children’s illustration and another for your MG and YA
