discord for SVS? and also subscription question
-
is there a discord channel for this community?
and if you finish your subscription(done with creative composition course 2.0), can you still visit the forums or discord?
-
@arielg I don't know if there is a discord but I do know you don't have to have a subscription to be on the forums
-
you can access these forums after your subscription runs out. Mine ran out last year and they generously allow past subscribers to access the forums. With so many online art teaching sites, that generosity is why I stick here and when finances loosen up will resubscribe here instead of elsewhere. However, I wish they would realize like other sites you can be a professional illustrator and NOT illustrate books. There is licensing and magazines, etc.

@arielg @jimsz One thing I love about this site on both sides
Subscription side: They have a huge variety of classes available for one price. They cover anything from fundamentals to more in-depth things like selling art work, kickstarters, agents ect.
Forum Side: Its a huge community with tons of super talented artists who are very welcoming and willing to help out those who are just getting a start. You don't have to have a subscription to join the forums which I think is great because there have been many times that I just didn't have the funds but that doesn't mean you loose your support group.
I also love seeing people who join for the long haul and seeing them grow and develop their style and eventually find work. There's nothing better than someone posting hype for their first book or first commission piece. It really gives you the chance to see how people can improve over the years with practice and good support

@arielg A while ago the last time we were doing some group run throughs of classes a bunch of us went to this discord: https://discord.gg/FWtGhy
A lot of us are still there though it's less SVS-centric these days
-
@arielg the forums are always FREEEEEE!!!!!
-
I think anyone is free to browse the forums as I’ve seen entries show up in Google search results.
-
@Nyrryl-Cadiz @danielerossi just FYI when i signed up before subscribing i could not access the forums.
but that's fine, and its cool that you can still access. -
@arielg I don't know what happened with your case. I joined the forum months before I even subscribed to SVS. Maybe your sign in info was wrong
-
@arielg So you mean you couldn't see any of the posts or go into the forums at all? Weird! What did it look like on your end. Did you get a screen that said "access denied" or something? Sometimes I cancel my subscription, but I have always had access to the forums and am able to post. They seem to treat the forums and the subscription as separate accounts with different logins- so I'm not sure how you accessed it through your subscription at all? Is it just different on my end? When you subscribed to the classes, did it let you sign into the forums with the same password/account?
-
@arielg just curious, did you just finished using the SVS free subscription when you tried to log in to the forums but couldn't? Because that means that you made a user account with the SVS school but you don't have an account with the forum yet. The SVS forum and the School are two separate platforms. If you're signed up with the school, it doesn't mean that you're also signed up with the Forum. You probably couldn't log in because you still did not have an account.
-
@TessaW I actually dont remember that good because it was 2 months ago, but i think perhaps i wasnt able to post anything. until i subscribed.
-
@Nyrryl-Cadiz yes, i think you are right, then perhaps that mistake made me think i couldn't register to the forums.
but its too long ago for me to remember which is which..thanksalso i do remember that i managed to sign in, but could not post.
-
@arielg really? It is weird! I haven't subscribed to the courses yet (I have done a trial version but was already posting on the forum before). Anyway! The good thing is, you stick with us now

@Braden-Hallett how is discord ? I heard a lot about this platform. Is it sort of chat room organised by category? A more lively forum? Can you still search for a discussion even after it is closed? What s the benefit to be on SVS discord rather tgan on the forum? Is the spirit of the platform like here? (I mean, nice and friendly?)
-
@Braden-Hallett Oh gosh I did not know there was a group hanging on discord! Do you all mind if I poke my head in from time to time? I moderate a few communities on there so my discord time is often pretty full but I'd honestly love a low-key hangout with friends from the forum
-
I signed in, so far its a quiet community, which is already a big plus (the discord one!)

Pretty much, yup
@Julia said in discord for SVS? and also subscription question:

As far as I know it all sticks around. Forever. Foreeeeeeveeeeeeeer.

Not an SVS discord, just a discord where a few people from SVS chat We all still hang out on the forum, too. They fill different roles.

It's a private server (you need to apply to join) so the spirit is absolutely nice and friendly (if a little different in flavour).
