Effective Vehicle Design - Mixing 2 boats
-
Hello,
I am following the course Effective Vehicle Design. And I am at assignment 3. Here is the description:
Draw an original boat by combining elements from two or more separate reference photos of two significantly different boats. Draw it from a custom angle not found in the reference images. Use line and shadow only.
I decided to combine this and this:
Here is a first sketch from the side:
Here is my work-in-progress to put it in perspective:
I found that to draw vehicle was a very good and fun way to learn perspective! It was very challenging and I hope it looks ok I will had some shadow and color this afternoon.

My progress of the day.
I added the shadows:
Then I tried to add some colors:
But I am not really happy with the colors so far... I will probably have to try something else tomorrow.
-
I tried a new color scheme this morning, I think it works better:
EDIT: Here is an alternative way to render it. As I don't plan to work on the background, I figured I should remove it completely.
Also adding noise on top of the drawing always add a bit of "polish"

Very nice! You have such nice clean lines.
-
@Geoffrey-Mégardon I really like the textural feeling on this one. Nice line work and perspective looks almost spot on! Nice job.
-
@K-Flagg Thank you! I used the straight line tool for some of the straight lines (e.g. the ropes)
-
@Larue Thank yo ufor your feedback whe you say "almost", can you tell me which parts break the illusion?
-
Very cool, I love the concept of aircraft turbines on a boat! It's so helpful to see the individual steps too, thank you for that.
-
@Geoffrey-Mégardon Well, if you twist my arm.....I can see by the left front edge of the bow the boat has a curved shape but if you follow that long "pink" structural beam as well as the vertical supports on the side of the ship facing us, it is almost perfectly straight(probably might want to either lower or raise your water horizon line so it doesn't line up almost exactly with that line either)I just think if you arc'd that whole pink "support" beam a tad down and changed the edge of the cannons as well the illusion of the curve of the boat would read better. Does that make sense. I've attached a quick draw over just so you can see if you agree. I am no pro by any stretch of the word, just a student like you!

@Larue Hello! thank you for your feedback!
Yes, that's because the horizontal pink beam is aligned with the horizon line that it does not curve.
I agree that it would help the readability that I move the horizon lines so that this beam curves.
Alternatively, I should have put more emphasis on the vertical pink beams probably...I thought you will say that the "aircraft" turbine's ellipses are not well aligned with the boat's long axis; it kind of bother me each time I look at this drawing
