Is vector illustration important for illustration



  • Hi there ,
    I have been looking through sites like Behance and noticed alot of the art seems to be vector based -Adobe illustrator,do you think this is something worth learning.I bought Infinity Designer but finding it a bit difficult.I do love that sharp illustration look.What do you all think or does anyone use vector programs.



  • @DOTTYP i think it all depends what style of illustration you like. I dont know Infinity Designer, but in Ilustrator you will find a blob tool, which is extremely easy to use and very useful for begginers:) perhaphs there is one in your programm. I know what iam saying cause i had to learn illustrator very quickly in order to create a poster and blob tool saved my life:) its probably not good for anything, but its good for a start. I decide not to use vectors too much, as they dont look organic. But as i said it all depends on what you like.



  • Yes, it just depends on the style you want to do. A few things I like about vector art is that you get very crisp edges and clean lines, plus you can scale your image up without the it getting fuzzy. It will retain the crisp look. But I also like the soft, textured, organic look you can get in Photoshop. So it depends on the style, and also what you want to do with the art.



  • @aska Affinity Designer is like Illustrator only really cheap,I think I will get a free trail of Illustrator and try that blob tool for myself.



  • @Kat I do like the crisp look,I have been told my art looks fuzzy at the edges and I am really trying to correct it,when I look at Behance everyone seems to use it but it is not really my style,but i could change my style as I am open to all possibilities.



  • @DOTTYP I've used Adobe Illustrator (and Freehand before that) for the past 20 years or so. In line with what others said above, it really depends upon what you want to do. I'd say not only stylistically but also regarding the end production of the work.

    From an end-production/manufacturing side, things like Pantone printing, silk-screening, embroidery, laser etching, etc. virtually require vector-based artwork (though, technology has grown to allow for raster-based imprinting in some areas, but not always of the same quality and with some limitations), which makes the artwork to be of the more graphical, crisp sort.

    I would be pretty firm that logos ought to be done as vector art (and be 1-3 PMS colors max and work as black-and-white; though, I suppose logos only used in casual games & the like on digital devices can get away without being vector and be as many colors as desired), and you will see other illustrative assets done as vector art, such as iconography, infographics, GUI, and other information-centric illustrations.

    If you are only ever wanting to do illustrations that are printed on paper (e.g. book cover/interior, editorial & spot, toy/product packaging & some products themselves (like boardgames & card games), point-of-purchase display, etc.) or that are used digitally (e.g. movies/animation, video games, website imagery, etc.) or that are only used as concept art (whether for media or for products), then you probably do not really need to spend time to learn how to use those programs.

    BTW, you can still do graphical styled artwork without using vector programs. Think of the artists that do cut paper art or others whom use Photoshop (or traditional media) to achieve such.



  • I use Illustrator in my day job a lot - it really depends what style you are pursuing. For my bill-paying job (corporate advertising) Illustrator is just as important as Photoshop, but if you are doing mostly narrative illustration, it really depends on the style you like. Illustrator has a completely different workflow - less "intuitive" and completely different from traditional art. With Photoshop, you can paint nearly as you would do with traditional media (if you care to do so) or go for a crisper look (Photoshop has vector tools too). You can look at an artist called Szymon Biernacki for someone who manages to combine the two approaches beatifully in Photoshop.
    Recently, I have done a series of modernistic/minimalistic illustrations in Illustrator (for an advertisement campaign) and I started to think about using the same style for book illustration. I am doing some experiments, which I think I would keep completely separate from my illustration portfolio, though it is actually quite intriguing.
    Sooooo....it is really up to you and what you like. Try it by all means (copying other artists´work is a good start) and see what resonates with you.



  • I have illustrator and don't use it too much mostly for T-Shirt design but you can do a lot of the same work in Photoshop with the vector tools it just requires a little more planning in the sketch phase



  • @smceccarelli Thanks i looked at Szymon Biernacki that is exactly the type of work I am talking about.I think i will give it a go and learn something new.



  • @rcartwright Thanks the vector pen in photoshop never works for me there is a vector pen in Clip studio that is a lot easier.



  • @QuietYell Thanks I am more interested in illustration for books or games,I guess I am trying to figure out how other people do things,other artists work always looks crisper than mine and I just assumed they used vectors.



  • @DOTTYP They most likely are vectors but the pen tool can do most of it with practice. Some programs like clip paint have smoothing options for the pens the also have vector bushes



  • @rcartwright I already use the smoothing options on the pens they do not work very well,I am beginning to wonder if my pen tablet pressure is set wrong or i am just a wobbly painter ,I dont have any problems with traditional tools my hand is quite steady .Anyway thanks for all your help very useful information.



  • @DOTTYP It depends upon the size the art was done and the size it is reproduced/viewed at. I've done plenty of work in Photoshop that could look as if it used some sort of vectorized app either for final art or for the shape construction but in fact was all Photoshop or hand inked and finished in Photoshop.

    In the pieces of mine I selected and put below, none of these used Illustrator or any other vector program (for whatever reason I chose not to on that project). Perhaps one or more of these may address creating the more crisp edges in Photoshop itself rather than using Illustrator, etc.

    BTW, you probably know this, but the advantage to using Illustrator/vector is that you can scale it "infinitely" large without quality degradation but with Photoshop/raster, you can only go up about 150% or maybe even up to 200% or so before the degradation starts becoming noticeable and increasingly undesirable.

  • @QuietYell yes I would assume most of these were vectors and they have the crisp edges I would love to achieve.I am going to have to work on it.Wonderful work by the way!!



  • @DOTTYP Thanks :) -- Are you using Photoshop? If so, you can change the feathering of the brush with the "hardness" slider option per the brush (amidst all kind of other settings). You can also get other brushes from KyleBrush.com that might give you presets you want (like his inking brushes).

    You can also use a feathered brush too; however, that needs needs the canvas size/resolution to be fairly large so that it tightens up when shrunk down. Also, you'll need to use a small feathered brush. In fact, using a smaller brush seems easiest to me for maintaining smooth line/curve work, even with hard-edged brushes. Larger ones tend to leave gaps when trying to get precise, smooth lines, but smaller ones "fill the gaps" better.

    Layer masks are helpful too. For instance, you can create a layer and fill it with whatever color (or use a fill layer) and then mask in/out as necessary to achieve the shape you want. That mask can be added to a folder (or you can do it directly in a folder mask if you want) and then you can paint however you want on the layers inside that folder. This keeps the shape while allowing you to "go crazy" within that shape. It is similar to the layer lock feature in the layers palette, but I prefer doing it this way (a masked folder with however many painted layers within)

  • Sometimes I use Photoshop, but usually Clip studio paint.I am going to take a good look at my brush settings.I dont use masks yet I am a beginner, I will try your advice tomorrow and thanks for all your help it is really nice of you.



  • @QuietYell After reading your advice I was able to adjust some of my brushes ( stabilization was not on),and I am now learning about masks.I also think my resolution might have been to low. Thanks so much your advice really helped me.

  • I wondered exactly the same thing as you a few years ago whether vector art was worth doing or not after looking at artists online and decided to try it as well. I had tried Illustrator and Corel Draw before but I hated them to be honest, then last year I tried Affinity Designer and it seemed a lot nicer to use.

    You can mix raster with vector in Affinity Designer- so you can get clean lines and textures as well. I followed a few free tutorials which helped me to begin with from tutsplus.com (https://design.tutsplus.com/categories/affinity-designer) and Frankentoon (http://www.frankentoon.com/).

    I think you just have to try different things and then decide whether or not to use it or not.
