Seeking advice on negotiating
-
Hello, I've only been with SVS for a couple of months and I'm already obsessed. Thank you for being such a wonderful community.
Like many of you, I have been approached by authors and small publishers to illustrate children books. For me, it hardly ever gets to the negotiating part because the project is abandoned for one reason or another. Just recently a project seems to be working out and we started negotiations. But their budget is very low. To recoup some of the cost, I'm planning on selling prints (and maybe even originals if I decide to go the traditional way) at art show and conventions.
My questions is - is it appropriate to ask for free copies of the book to sell at my booth at shows? If so, how much is reasonable? How would I word it in a contract?
Thank you for your time!

I don't really have an answer to this, but Will Terry and Tyrus Goshay do discuss this in a youtube video a bit:

It starts around the 17 min mark.

Ah! Thank you! I thought I heard of the practice before but couldn't remember where I'd heard it. It was that video!
