AFFINITY Program Classes/Troubleshooting?
-
Hello all,
does anyone have experience using Affinity Photo and Publisher instead of Photoshop and Indesign for mocking up picture books?
I was hoping someone may have any good class recommendations or illustrator-focused YouTube channels I could learn from. Thanks in advance, I'd be interested to hear of people's experience.
I'm currently doing the Children's Book Pro course and trying to import Lee's Indesign Templates into Affinity Publisher. I have been down the Internet/Youtube vortex for information and it says I should be able to export an IDML file but when I go to export, my software doesn't even see it.

@Sara_C it would be reasonable to request the templates be in a more universal format. Some possibilities would be postscript (.ps), encapsulated postscript (.eps), PDF, images in formats: (.jpg) or (.png).
The postscript, EPS and PDF can all be easily generated from inDesign. The images would take an extra step to rasterize the exported format.

@thomas-young thank you so much Thomas, I will ask for a different saved version. It's hard to know what to ask for if you don't know what to ask for!
Thanks for taking the time out to answer.

@Sara_C Another thing to consider is what version of Affinity Publisher you use. It might need to be updated to the latest version.

@thomas-young Thanks Thomas, I've just bought it so it's all pretty new to me!

I used Affinity Publisher a few years back to do a picture book, it did the job perfectly fine. Unfortunately, you have to export an IDML file version from InDesign itself before you can import it into Publisher.
You could try and download a trial version of InDesign, convert the file, then cancel the trial? Or you could contact support and see if they could try exporting IDML files from InDesign, or make PDFs at the very least.
Now that Affinity have offered a six month free trial, I'm sure there will be a few more people experimenting with Affinity products.

@Sara_C hi! Drivethru has a couple good tutorials and templates that are totally free

@Jason-Crowley Thanks Jason, yes, I'll reach out to Lee and see if he can change it for me as I'm doing the Children's Pro class. Thanks for your input and I think you're right, they're will definitely be a lot more experimentation and questions in the future.

@makekong this was great, thank you so much! Have you tried the template generator or did you learn to build your own?

@Sara_C oh I actually have been using apple pages to publish because
1- Im a total noob in affinity but I already have the drafts started
2- in pages the table of contents is linked to the chapter and this is great for a mobile versionAnd I offer (by recommendation) a 6x9 pdf file, a 2 page 6x9 (for ipads) and a mobile version pdf.
But as soon as I learn a bit more I will be sure to share
