Learning Value/Color...advice please...

Hi everybody,
I am going through the process of doing some Master studies. I have some books with art of Howard Pyle, Norman Rockwell, Van Dyke and Caravaggio. I have been doing little sketches of them, and planning on trying them out in my own style.

I know working out Value first before color is important, but I am not sure what to do after. I am working digitally in procreate FYI. I have done the color and light/shadow course, but if any of you could give any pointers on what choices you make to go from a black and white, to choosing color (particularly muted colors), that would be really helpful. I feel a little stuck...

@Katt Hi, Here is a color chart I developed many years ago. The colors are arranged with matching gray values and muted steps at each value. Note: Each color has its most outstanding purity at what I refer to as its MaxChroma value. For example, Yellow is pure in the lighter values, while blue-violet is pure in the darker values. A chart like this enables you to create color mixtures without changing their light/dark value or to mute their purity, again without altering their darkness. The numbers are my system of indexing colors: Hue, Chroma, and Value. It is a subtractive color model.

@Katt you’re welcome. Have you chosen a specific masterpiece to copy? If so, would you willing to share which one? Please explain what you find confusing about replacing the grayscale with color.
