I hope this is okay to post here. I need any guidance I can get. I recently launched my website since that was advice was mentioned on the SVS podcast. However Im not really sure if its curated enough. Its very simple and eventually I would like to add a store, etc on there. Please let me know your honest thoughts on your first impressions and what may seem out of place. I genuinely appreciate your time.

@AnumC thank you for sharing your site! First order of business: which illustration market do you want to get into?

Each market has a specific requirement for the types of work and skills they are looking for. Currently most of your portfolio consists of a single character spots without much background, action or story context, so it is difficult for art directors to see if you are suitable to work on their specific project requirements.

If you are into children's books, you need interactions between multiple characters. Think of whom a child interact with in daily lives: parents, friends, teachers, grandparents, school bus drivers etc.

If you are into editorial illustration, look at the kind of magazines or online publications you want to illustrate for, and the kind of stuff they hire illustrators for. There are a lot of concept-driven illustration in editorial market. Try illustrating concepts like "women empowerment", "climate change" or "work-life balance" if you want to be in this market

If you're into greeting cards, well, make greeting card artworks for specific seasons, festivals and life events.

That's just my 2 cents. I am not an art director or anything...I just love to learn and have been illustrating some editorial-type concepts for online educational website. Will be happy to chat if you need help 😊

I took a look and I have to chime in with ArtMelC: In which area of art do you want to work?
It would be great if you'd answer this question and then compare your illustration with work already published in that field.

@ArtMelC Hi! Thank you so much for your response! Once you mentioned editorial illustrations it all suddenly clicked. I was pretty much drawing what I enjoyed and hoping something would align and sometimes it takes someone with an objective point of view to point things out.

I did look up some examples of editorial illustration on Pinterest and definitely feel like this is a direction I would like to go.

That would be amazing! Please let me know the best way we can contact. I would love to pick you brain on editorial illustrations.

Thanks again and have a wonderful day!

@MimiHecher Thank you for your response! After doing a little bit of research it seems like editorial illustration would be a good way to go. The first step I think would be finding some masters and doing master studies.

@AnumC you could email me through my website, or DM me on Instagram. Both are linked in my footer below 🙂 I'm far from being an expert of anything though!
