Children’s Book Pro: Should I sign up?
-
So the expiration date for signing up seems to be on February 15, 12 days away, before it starts on the 16th. I know they are gonna do a Q&A on the 9th, but I would like to figure out if I should sign up or not before the 9th, if possible.
From what I recall hearing about it last time, it sounded like a program for how to make a book dummy so you can then try to get it published.
I’m currently just interested in working on my portfolio to get hired to illustrate other people’s books, and work on my own ideas for books later on.
Should I sign up, or should I wait until I want to create my own book? Also if I was ready to sign up another time, but not a subscriber, would I still be able to sign up for it then or only if I’m a subscriber of SVSLearn?

@kayleenartlover full disclosure: I haven’t taken the course, but I have watched all of their free introductory videos about it. Yes, you will have a finished book dummy at the end of it, but it won’t be one that you wrote. It will be a fairytale written by someone else.
From watching the introductory videos, CBP seems to teach you how to illustrate children’s books, whether you write them yourself or are hired to illustrate someone else’s book. So if your goal is to become a children’s book illustrator, this might give you the training you’re looking for.

I took the course last year, and it's not about writing your own books. It's about how to make illustrations for other people's books. It covers so much: character design, environments, layouts, when to use spots/vignettes/single pages/double spreads...
I thought it was worth it for sure. And you get the videos forever, including the zoom Q&As, so you can go back over all the stuff again and again as needed.

Hi @kayleenartlover, I highly recommend the course, even if you’re not ready to make a dummy just yet. It’s true what @Melissa_Bailey said about the fairy tale, but I made a few dummies of my own using all the principles in the course. If you have a bday coming up, I would ask for CB Pro!

It’s a killer course. If you can afford it definitely go for it. Anyone who wants to illustrate a children’s book should take this course. It is PACKED with info

@kayleenartlover I'm curious: Did you sign up?
I had not registered for the SVS-Forums when you needed us to help you decide, else I would have said: I absolutely recommend it! I took part in October 2022.
Although I don't feel happy with any of the three fairy tales they provide to illustrate, everything else of the course is fantastic and I really miss the opportunity to be part of a weekly zoom meeting with the instructors.
If I had the money I would have also participated now. I hope I will earn enough money the upcoming months to be able to book the next round! Also I highly recommend to take the chance for any upcoming CBPro - as you never know when they will decide to quit offering the course.

A brilliant course. Absolutely packed with information and tips and inspiration. About how to illustrate other people's books but would apply to your own as well. I'll be taking it again some time in the future as I wasn't quite ready for it but loved every minute.

It is a fantastic course that I go back to over and over when I need little reminders about processes and tips on techniques. Really excellent and thorough! I can't tell you how many times I've been in the middle of a struggle and thought, "I think Lee (or Jake or Will) had a video on this." The beauty is that I continue to have access to the course! Totally worth it!

@MimiHecher Yes I did, and it’s been exciting so far
