Hello from Utah
-
Hello everyone. My name is Joseph, and I am from Utah, USA.
I am a 40 year old father of two. I have been drawing digitally for probably 10 years now. I work full time as a real estate appraiser. I have done some small freelance illustration work, but I don't really want to go full time as an illustrator for now. I just love to draw, and am content spending my time improving my illustration work. I would like to get good enough to do a partial retirement in about 15 years and spend the rest of my days doing illustration work (if that even is a thing you can make money doing when that time comes). If not, I will still draw for fun the rest of my life.
I plan on spending next year re-working my portfolio. Right now, I am relatively happy with the work, but it is kind of all over the place. I want to pin down a specific style for myself.
Looking forward to interacting with everyone on here!

@jvartandillustration Hi! Welcome to SVS.
You should check out Lee White's class on Style.
He really goes in-depth on what style consists of, & gives clear steps on how to find or develop your style. It's impressive how well he nails down an often elusive concept.

@jvartandillustration Hi Joseph, welcome! Love your timeline of loving to draw and in the further future be a working illustrator. I should adapt your timeline. Still have over 25 years before retiring age hits. Plenty of time. I'm 37 and also mother of two. Can't imagine illustrators won't exist in the future. Without art and illustration life is very bare.
I found the magic of colour classes very interesting, though very hard to master. Looking forward to see your work develop further over time. -

@Chantal-Goetheer For sure. I will be drawing regardless of whether or not it gets me work.
