Hi, I'm Kristen!

Hi everyone! I'm Kristen and I've recently joined SVS. I'm excited to start interacting with you all on this forum. It seems to me that SVS is the place for folks who are really serious about this industry so I'm thrilled to be here.
Here's a little bit about me:
I'm a political cartographer by day in Washington DC and an illustrator by night. Originally from Wisconsin, I love birding, being in nature, baking, learning and drinking too much coffee.
And here is some of my recent work:
Can't wait to hear from like-minded illustrators and solve art problems together
Thanks for reading!

@Kristen-Lango Welcome, Kristen! You've found a great place to learn. I've never heard of a political cartographer! What do you do in a normal work day?
-
Hi @Kristen-Lango ! Welcome! Love your cat with the worms
-
Welcome!
-
Hi, Kristen. I do nature journaling and love your illustration on migration since I just spent several days painting watercolors of the snow goose migration flying through our area (upstate New York.). Welcome to the forum.
-
@Valerie-Light Thank you Valerie! I've seen some of your work on Critique Arena and I think it's wonderful. Ah yes, haha it's a little less exciting than it sounds - if you can imagine census data meeting election data on a map, that's what I'm looking at from day to day. A normal day includes data parsing, coding, and analyzing/creating maps in GIS (geographic information systems) software. Thanks for your interest!
Are you a full time illustrator? I love hearing how others have found illustration. -
@miranda-hoover Thank you Miranda!
-
@demotlj Thank you Laurie! I'm always happy to find illustrators who also like birding - I'd love to see your nature journaling.

Hi Kristen!!! Welcome to the forum!!! Looking forward to getting to know you and seeing more of your work. Where are you from/located?
-
@demotlj Hi Kristen, Welcome to the forum!
Your nature journaling is beautiful. Taking photos & sketching or painting them later is legit, too. I don't think there's just one way you're "supposed" to do things. You just happen to like painting this way rather than en plein air. Everyone has to find the process that works best for them, and obviously this is working for you. -
Hi Kristen,
Welcome!
-
@Kristen-Lango Thank you, Kristin! Honestly your gig sounds really interesting- data visualization plus science is a cool intersection to be working in. In my day job I'm a scenic artist for live theater in NYC, and I'd always wanted to illustrate, but didn't start taking steps in that direction till the pandemic ate my job. I'm still portfolio-building and trying to figure out how to talk to art directors and work on deadline. This community has been a lifeline through that process.

Hello and welcome!
Looks as if you're a bit into birds! -
@Kristen-Lango I deleted my post with my nature journal paintings because it was confusing people and I didn't want to take away from your greetings. Welcome to the forum and sometime we'll have to start a nature journal thread to share our mutual love of birds.
-
@randarrington Hi there!! Thank you for the kind welcome! I'm located in Washington DC at the moment but I'm from Manitowoc, WI originally - went to school in Milwaukee. What about you?
-
@Valerie-Light Thanks Valerie! That scenic artist job sounds wonderful too! I'm so sorry that the pandemic took that from you. But allow me to say, your professionalism as an artist shows in your illustration work. So happy to get to know you and others navigating the illustration world. I can already tell SVS is great for that
-
@demotlj Aw I'm sorry, I really liked seeing your work. Absolutely, I'd love to be part of that thread!

Count me in on that!!!

@Kristen-Lango I live in Virginia not far from you it would seem. I live about 20 minutes south of DC. I'm a Virginia born and raised but I do come from the western mountain range.
