"Agile" Corporate Framework for the Creative Process?
-
Hey guys!
When I don't have Illustration work, I keep myself afloat by writing content for B2C and B2B companies. Aka, blogposts. One topic I often write about is how companies utilize the "Agile" framework to essentially create better work quicker.
I was always quick to dismiss this as corporate Jargon that was ultimately too abstract to really apply to me, but tonight I realized "Hey, those lessons actually apply to Illustration pretty damn well" and wrote a little article on the topic.
Sharing because I find it interesting as an example of laterally applicable concepts, I suppose!
Did you guys hear of "Agile" before and got any thoughts on how it would translate to an Illustrator's workflow?

Hi Nathalie,
I worked as a Project Manger, still do part-time.
My opinion is that much of Agile can be used for art. Each project can be divided in sprints, have sprint planning and recap. -
@nathalie-kranich thank you for sharing your article! I had seen the term 'Agile Environment' pop up before, but I didn't stop to find out what it was because I figured it was some kind of industry tool like Microsoft Office. I didn't realize that it was shorthand of sorts for an iterative design framework. You did a nice job explaining it and I agree, it is what we as illustrators have been doing all along. My day job is teaching engineering design in a middle school and I have been describing the engineering design process as a creative process that even artists and designers use to strengthen their work. I have been leading 'critiques' part way through our design projects so the students can get feedback before they start building their designs.

@jenn @samanta Yeah! I've been seeing the term around so much but it never occured to me until a little while ago that I had already heard the same lessons applied to art so many times. It's interesting to me that the same principles can kind of survive in these vastly different environments that feel so unrelated normally. Just amused me, really.

@samanta I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THIS!!!!! I currently do UI/UX development and have been doing Agile for the last 3 or 4 years (waterfall before that) and I can totally see where using this system for the ideation process as well. I took a script writing course at the Sony institute years ago and they were (without knowing it) doing something kinda agile like then.

Would you say it works better than waterfall? Do you see any positive advantage?

@nathalie-kranich This article is excellent and exactly what I need for my creative process right now. Thanks so much!

@samanta Yeah if you can get people to implement it correctly. You get a lot of places mixing the two. Also getting your UX development/testing out in front of the dev team is really important. I think it reduces reworking of the code reducing development time.
