    • RE: Our SVS Virtual Studio MARCH 2021๐Ÿ€

Currently I'm working on illustrations with cartoony dragons. I am actually working on the way overdue "Dragonfly" prompt... In preparation for that I did a bookmark design for "St Jordi's day" which is a big celebration in Catalonia (the day of the book and the rose). This is for a contest at my son's school:

      stjordi2021-punt-llibre.png

This is done with markers, ink (callibrated pen) and prismacolor color pens for the greens.

Finally completed my "comic clip" (analog version, color pencil on paper):

In the future I may do a "digitally remastered version".

      Ready for a next project!

@doro_thea Also have you tried other approaches to her hair? Currently it looks like a background shadow, it doesn't feel like it's in the same plane as the head.

      @doro_thea I like the lettering!

I am not sure I understand the reasons behind the different font sizes though. It feels like "The Beauty" is the title and "and the beast" is a subtitle - is this intentional?

    • RE: Need help/feedback

@Rekha-Salin-0 I'd say the composition is unbalanced, the two characters pull the weight too much to the right. I think it would improve by moving at least the central character more to the left.

I would try to not use such dark black for the contours of the eyes, so that it is less "in your face" and more in line with the rest of the colours. Maybe experiment with dark shades of the skin colour of the characters rather than pure black?

    • RE: Our SVS Virtual Studio ๐ŸŽ„DECEMBER 2020๐ŸŽ„

My challenge this December is to finish my 4-page comic project, that's been dragging for a while. It's a "comic-clip", a song put into comic. I chose "Sultans of Swing" from the Dire Straits, one of my favourite bands from my youth.

Here are the two finished pages (photos from my mobile, not good quality). The technique is sepia color pencil (Caran D'Ache Prismalo).

Page 1 (hmm this is not the fully finished product, I have since completed the tree):

      Page 3:

      sultans3-finished-photo.jpeg

This is WiP pencil for page 2:

      sultans2-pencil.jpg

And these are thumbnails for page 4. On the left one version of the full page, on the right a rework of the bottom part of the page that I like much better.

@doro_thea I like G, LOL it reminds me of an illustration I made some months ago with a similar idea (https://carles.barrobes.com/drawing/posts/frog-and-prince/). I like that it showcases the characters but keeping some mystery as to the beast.

E is also one of my favourites for the emotion it conveys, and compositionally it has great contrast (shape sizes, value...). Although it could be hard to draw the expression of face at that angle.

    • RE: Hi! Iโ€™m new here & looking for groups/classmates to join?

@Jade-Yaert welcome! I also joined recently (last summer) and will be looking for fellow classmates to follow along the foundations program level 2 after Xmas (I will likely have finished level 1 then, just working on light & shadow).

54 hours a week to study illustration, that is great. I also went down to work part-time a year back to free up time for arts and other personal activities, but I will be working at a much slower pace than you ๐Ÿ˜… - I can maybe allocate 10-15h?

Anyway hope to see you around and share our progress!

      Welcome @Kiel-Ewing - I'm also a Software Engineer, 53 ๐Ÿ˜…

I also joined recently, just announced it today.

Looks like we are in a similar journey together! (I am finishing level 1 foundations and after Xmas will be tackling level 2). Happy to be a fellow traveller.

These are e.g. the couple illustrations I made for my most recent talk that was broadcast yesterday, which have benefited from me following @Jake-Parker's intro courses and learning about copic markers (they have become a staple of mine):

    • Recently joined from Barcelona, looking for fellow coursemates plus a local community

      Hi everyone!

I am Carles, from Barcelona (Catalonia). I joined SVS this past summer, but am only now starting to try and be more active in the forums, so I thought an introduction was in order.

My goal is not to become a professional illustrator, rather to improve my art and storytelling skills. I want to draw comics, and also add illustrations to my professional presentations and talks (I am a software engineer, currently freelancing). Besides attending a local atelier two hours a week, I am mostly learning by following various online courses, SVS being one of them.

One of the things I would love to find in the forums are fellow classmates (I was excited to see this was a common practice here) - I am following the foundations curriculum, will be starting level two around or after Xmas, and will be posting about it.

Ideally I'd also love to find other aspiring comic artists in my area to build a local community. We could eventually meet in person to share our learnings, self critique and provide mutual support and maybe work together in projects. Please contact me if you live nearby and like this idea!

Thanks for the comments and feedback so far, and hoping to be an active part in this community!

    • RE: CRITIQUE NEEDED

@Maggie-Shahanska good work! This has clearly improved. I agree, the scene now has much more tension, also you made the spider look more threatening ๐Ÿ‘

    • RE: CRITIQUE NEEDED

@Maggie-Shahanska I think you got the right idea right with cropping the house off-frame, but the location before was better in my opinion: you had a nice diagonal going from the spider to the bugs to the house. Now the composition feels unbalanced to the left... ๐Ÿค” - I think you should keep the house on the top right corner as it was, with the current cropping.

Maybe you are trying to make space for the cover text? It would help to add the text early on, so the we can see the overall effect.

Also I'm not sure cropping the spider is a good idea (I personally liked it better before), but TBH I'm not very experienced with composition - other students can give you better advice here.

As an aside, a course I really liked for composition is Will Terry's creative composition 2.0 - it's one of the best I've watched in SVS - it will give you a lot of ideas on improving this illustration.

Now the feeling of the piece has changed a lot from "we are unaware of the spider" to "we are escaping the spider"... is this intentional, is this what you are trying to convey?

    • RE: Complete! #draw50things project finished.

      Loving your choice of perspective!

Maybe you could hint at the cast shadow of the window frame on the bed/sofa... that would look cool.

    • David Hohn's Basic Perspective assignments

These are images from the assignment of the basic perspective course that consists of drawing a room from various angles. I find doing these exercises a lot of fun (coming up with different viewpoints), while making your visual brains work hard at the same time.

      From within the closet:

      From the window:
