    • RE: How to Be the Best Art Student

Hello everyone, for me this is to me the most essential podcast episode of 3 Point Perspective for anyone that is attending art class, be it SVS or other art courses and that is trying to get the best out of their subscription or out of their art studies.

Just one small introduction, i'm from Portugal, i'm thirty seven and drawn my entire life, always have been an hobbyist and never attended art studies or school or got an academic degree for that matter but am certainly grateful for finding out about SVS.

I've listened to all 3PP Podcast episodes and streamed most of the courses at SVS though never posted any of the assignments as i'm still at an absorption stage

SVS showed me my flaws and how to up my drawing game and provided tools to do so, in a very pragmatic way nailing down what makes a good illustration, furthermore i'm very thankful to what you're doing with SVS mostly because education in general and in particular in the US isn't that very affordable and art education should be available to everyone and even if that doesn't come with a art degree it's still great.

I do believe SVS is a very pratical tool to get better if you're willing to put in the effort, work on yourself and certainly taking art studies seriously and working on self-improvement does come with the age. I hope you guys get to improve SVS to the point anyone willing to put in that effort can do so and better their art skills and i wish SVS the internacional recognition it deserves.

So congratulations to everyone involved, and according to what i've seen online and the prices some institutions apply for masterclasses, you are truly doing holy work for the art community, i hope with this you are making an impact in the lives of many. Thank you Jake, Will, Lee and students.

PS: I also consider the Podcast to be fundamental as it adresses all those non spoken issues related to being a full-time job artist, it is very amuzing, funny and informative.

@CosmoglotJay Thank you Jay, i've just shared it.

It's a shame this is happening when you're trying to be a bit altruistic or do something good for the community but unfortunately with spotlight often there's a lot of envy around and i believe these people were already there, they just weren't apparent or didn't spoke up and just needed something like this to spark their need to express themselves about what are their thoughts on Inktober.

[Edit] I do understand both points of view but if you want to make something known in the world you have to brand it, and getting sponsors to make the word go round is just a part of it. I also believe if he is the one behind the Inktober challenge he's entitled to do whatever he wants with it.

Apart from Inktober i think Jake is a terrific artist that doesn't need to prove anything to anyone, but nonetheless it's a shame he's getting all this backlash but he shouldn't give up on inktober .

BTW using other people's IP is overrated in our culture in my humble opinion, start your own thing.

    • RE: Cintiq question

@lmrush Hello, I can relate a lot to this question because for a long time i have had trouble with the digital versus traditional organic feeling and accuracy in the drawing experience and since most of the things I do require a polished lineart version, which is the part of the process I get the most enjoyment from, I didn’t quite match this experience until I got my first graphic display tablet.

Until then I’ve had two Wacom tablets, one bamboo and one intuos series, and an iPad in which only autodesk sketchbook seemed to mimic somehow the paper drawing experience. Plus I did buy a matte screen protector for the iPad since its surface is very slick and doesn’t match at all the feeling of drawing on paper.

So I do agree the program you’re using might influence that, for instance I only get that when I’m working on 100% proportion on photoshop, and you might get less issues with cursor offset and screen calibration on a Wacom Cintiq than in other brands but they are getting there.

Size also matters so getting a big one is important if you do arm movements, I find those particularly important.

Ps: I never tried a cintiq in first person but will gives a lot of feedback on using his cintiq as he had the same issues as I had regarding drawing on paper and moving to digital.

@Nyrryl-Cadiz Will talks about how through self deception and "his own style" prevented him from working on his sketching habilities and bettering his own draftsmanship, becoming better at drawing. I just wanted to know because I think it's pretty relevant and I'm making a podcast playlist on Spotify, so..

      Hello friends,

Maybe this isn't the appropriate place but I was looking for the episode where Will talks about self-deception and drawing skills, do any of you know what podcast this is from?

    • RE: The Year in Review

      @Jake-Parker
To be pragmatic I learned a lot, I still am learning everyday and trying to include it on the long run, as lifelong education, since the moment we leave school we still keep absorbing information and acquiring bad habits even though we’re not quite aware of it.

I’m the voracious and passionate student, the guy that carries the sketchbook everywhere all the time and always did, usually I take both the iPad and the sketchbook since I’m very picky with the organic drawing I get on paper, I am very fond of facial expressions and have based my whole artistic expression in portrait studies, sketches, and paintings on that. And for this same reason I’m contextualising, I did learn a lot from Will’s creative composition class, draw50things challenge and Tammy Smith’s branding for artists, for me these were the best Svslearn classes as it allowed me to see where I was slacking.

Thought all classes are in general very good and display varied content that might please different sorts of art studies.

All the best to svs in 2020

    • RE: Brush pen with no cap

@danielerossi personally i keep a lot of materials at home just laying there, like brushes, i have some brush pens of several different brands i use for inkwashes that are just laying there since i take the ipad around all the time, for instance, i work traditional mainly mainly at home, but if you often take your materials to places it would be recommended to get some cap yes, it's really bad to get a good quality brush ruined, ie. a Series 7 or other Kolinsky which are expensive.

    • RE: Procreate 5 importing photoshop brushes.

@xin-li I do use Procreate and Photoshop but from time to time I still stick to drawing traditionally as I'm a bit extra-picky with the feeling of drawing digital tools not always are able to mimic. I did check the public beta 5 and the brushes engine seems to be better but still very far from drawing with a screen tablet Cíntiq or Cíntiq alike, the animation feature is awesome though and the new brushes are cool too even though I use max ulishev's maxpacks most of the time.
