    • RE: Riley's Sketchbook

      AlWilliamsonStudy.jpg

A study I did on some of Al Williamson's work. I Love his inking and characters. I focused on getting the same energy in his original pose in my study and on his masterful inking techniques. My copy is fairly inferior but I learned a TON! I noticed that his ink strokes are generally thin and very in thickness just enough to suggest different forms. I also loved how he made the clothing out of thick and gestural strokes. My hatching strokes are quite a bit darker than his. I may have not been using a thin enough tool or he worked in a larger size than I did.

I am new here, but I just read the topics on the passing of Richard Cartwright and viewed some of his amazing art. You can count on me to participate!

    • RE: Our SVS Virtual Studio 2019!

This month I have been studying how to draw the head. A few of these are studies from life, others are studies from Andrew Loomis' book "Drawing the Head and Hands"

    • Riley's Sketchbook

Hey everyone! It has been awhile, but college started for me again so I finally have access to a scanner. I just want to share some sketches I have made over the summer. I have good bunch, so I will release two or three over the next few days. Comments and thoughts welcome!

      Some simple face studies.

Tried to translate my knowledge about the head into some character designs.

    • Sucked In

Hey everyone! Long time no post, school is crazy, being an engineering student and making art on the side is even crazier! Just wanted to post this piece I'm really happy with. The assignment was creating depth through perspective, atmospheric perspective, layering, etc. I decided to focus on good old one point perspective and I wanted to make something a little surreal. Let me know what you think!

    • RE: Dwarven Alchemist

It looks great! Every time I look at it I notice another cool detail about the character. I think you really did a great job portraying the feel and personality of the character. I would also vouch that some more work on the characters shadow on the environment would be a nice improvement. Otherwise, the guy you made it for now have a great character drawing to show off at his D&D groups.

Still in a rough drawing stage, but it is coming along. I am planning on doing some inking studies along side finishing up the penciling.

    • A New Artist Appears! Hello!

      Hi,
I am Riley Woodworth, and I am an artist from Idaho. Yes, it is true, we have a lot of potatoes (and they're the BEST!). I have been making art for many years, however I have dealt with a lot of doubt and discouragement like all of you. I aspire to tell stories with my art. I don't have a process or style nailed down yet, I equally enjoy drawing and finishing with ink, or creating an oil painting. I lack an art community in my area so I am really excited to be apart of this community, and I hope to be a good friend here and contribute what I can.
      Happy Arting!

To start, here are some selected pieces I have made. These are the closest things i have to a "portfolio":

      2016 Oil on Canvas Paper

      2017 Ink
      Portriats_Ink_2017.jpg

2017 Ink. One of my favorites, inspired by a D&D meme my nephew sent me.

2018 Ink. This is the last Finished piece I have done. After this I kind of gave up for awhile.

    • RE: Webcomics

I would agree that Webtoon and Tapas are great options. They both have dedicated phone apps. Using Webtoon, it always updates me on new comics and when a comic I am following has a new post. Would definitely check yours out when you get it started!

    • RE: Which banner do you prefer?

I would agree that one of the final three are the best. The blue on white clouds for the first two were difficult to focus on. The third has some really nice simplicity. I personally think the logo near the bottom also helps balance the image, as simple as it is, but if this is going to be on a floor the logo might not even be visible.

@Braden-Hallett Your color choice is always amazing! You have a very personal and unique style. This happens whenever I leave my nephews to play alone. By the time I get back some one is in a head lock, haha!

    • RE: Our SVS Virtual Studio AUGUST🌻2019

Been working on a personal piece. I am a sci-fi kind of guy and after watching Star Trek: First Contact I really wanted to do a bio-robotic character. So I drew up a few concepts found one I liked and I am running with it. Unfortunately my light sketch is.....well....light, so my scanner can't pick it up very well. I have been calling it an "assassin" but the more I have developed the character I have begun to look at it as a "misunderstood robot with a tragic past". The piece shows it awaking after an unknown amount of time has passed. My ultimate plan for the piece is for it to be the final panel in a short comic.

    • RE: Superstition WIP

@karolifo Your ideas look like they are coming together. I like the little details you are thinking of to clarify/enhance the story. I would warn against making your compositions to cluttered with detail. For example, showing the girl in B being both afraid of being the 13th guest at dinner and a afraid of the black cat may muddle the clarity rather than help. But the subtle details like the matching color of the girl and the chair and the luck charmes in A sound like great ideas. Can't wait to see were these go!
