RE: Reworking an old illustration
This is what I have so far!
I am pretty pleased with where this is going! I am glad I decided to illustrate the moment after she removes the trap, I think the story is much clearer this way. Thanks @Will-Terry for pushing me to move past my first idea!
I will still add tools floating from the toolbox and magic swirls coming from it!
Any comments/critique is appreciated!
Book project (June 17th updates!)
I thought I would share the good news here: I have just been hired to illustrate 2 picture books that are going to be distributed in schools in Malta! Since I am working with an education department, the budget is minimal, but they agreed that the author and I keep all the copyright on our work, so we are planning to self publish them after they are done. Plus I am hoping to produce some portfolio pieces in the process.
So the first book is about (in one sentence) a little "girl" (aka hedgehog) who's really hungry after playing all day outside, comes in the kitchen, sees all sort of fruit on the counter, eats them all, and then realizes her mom was planning on making a pie with them. Is a really short story for kid around 5 y.o and they are going to print it in A3 format (so HUGE)
I started working on it this week-end, and I am rewatching @Will-Terry Illustrating Children's Book class at the same time to make sure I am following each step carefully haha!
I worked out the layout of the book, and now I am working on my main character
These are my initial sketches
And these are the finalists
I think the last one is my favorite, any thoughts ?
RE: 3rd thursday idea - Santa's reindeer got the flu!
Now it's almost done! I think I'm gonna put it aside for a day or two and then look at it with a fresh eye...
January 3rd Thursday!
I worked all day on my sketch for this month 3rd Thursday!
My idea : Stanley is a dog that is not too happy to see his "parents" coming home with a crying baby! (Of course, if this was a book, Stanley and the baby would be best friends at the end!)
After several thumbnails and sketches, I came up with this composition. Any thoughts on the composition ?! The blank space in the corner is for text.
RE: Progress from 2014
@Lee-White You are so right! I was focusing so much on improving the execution that I completely forgot the first principle you guys are always focusing on " STORY!" At least is was still very rough, so not hard to change!
I reworked it this morning. Since my little explorer is wearing an aviator hat I decided to push this aspect, give him a plane and make him think he is flying!
I included long grass in the foreground, I am not sure if it works, but I want the viewer to know that the post he is on is not high, he is just imagining that his head is in the clouds.
Thanks again for the comment!
Questions about agents, educational illustration and more
I know I haven't been very active recently on the forum, I am working on several project/commissions and I also took a class with CGMA which was quite time consuming so I didn't have much time for anything else.
However, this is my safe place when I have questions about anything art related and something HUGE just happened in the last week and I wanted to have your very valuable input.
I was approach by an agent from a very reputable agency that is interested in representing me if we could use emojis on the forum, I would include every happy/surprised/crazy emojis possible here!!! I am not sure I am allowed to say which agency (although I don't see why not..) but let just say some of the illustrator I admire the most are represented by them so I am kind of flabbergasted by all this haha!
However, I don't want to get TOO excited, we are still very early in the process - She gave me some briefs and I have to do sketches and send them to her by next Monday and then we'll see!
Anyway, we spoke over the phone for about 45 minutes today and I am very, very, VERY excited by pretty much every aspect of what she was telling me except one thing. She was mostly talking about finding me work in the education market initially. I was very clear with her that my goal is eventually to do trade books. I was under the impression that for her this was a natural first step toward eventually getting commercial/trade book projects. I just wanted to hear your opinion on this.
I remember one class by @Lee-White where he was talking about educational work and I was under the impression that you can't really get any portfolio quality material from this kind of work (mostly because the turnover is very fast...) He was also saying that the pay is usually bad, but that's not so much a concern for me at this time as I have another full time job that pays the bills.
Honestly, I had a very good feeling when I spoke to her today and I think I would sign any contract she send my way if she does decide to be my rep (I would fell like loosing a HUGE opportunity by turning this down) but I still wanted to have your opinion on the educational work aspect. Are you doing educational work? Can it really lead to trade picture book? Any other thoughts?
RE: Transportation WIP
Here is a little update on this image!
@Diego_BioSteam That's really cool! I didn't know that. I read the link you sent, however I couldn't find a list of insect that does that. So I stayed with my original insects choices... But it's still very interesting
@Jason-Bowen Thanks! It really helped
