    • RE: Inktober Book Plagerism Accusations

I watched Alphonso's video and I was quite shocked when he almost claimed to invent art teaching methods and art concepts like value numbering and using 3 values to show cube form in space (which I used to teach to teenagers in basic art course whithout even knowing of Alphono's existence ) and many more exercises like creating gradients, applying textures. His video became an absurd at that point.

"Watts Atelier's strength isn't in inking. It's in the charcoal portraiture and figurative renderings in the old-school Russian realist style they're known for."
Probably for some people they are best known for charcoal portraiture but to me it is the very first atelier that got me interested in inking.
I watched live streams with Jeff Watts inking with his incredible ability long before I was ever interested in Inktober. They have also great online lessons on inking. I think it is definitly one of their strengths.

    • RE: Portfolio piece WIP - Multicolor cow

I really like the way you drew curious cows on the left side! However, I think there is a little problem with the one on the right. Cow's nose is "touching" the car in such a way that it actually makes it look like the car is stuck to her nose. Will Terry explains that in "Creative Composition" video (check "negative space, implied lines") and I learned it from there!:)
Another thing I would maybe work on is the line stroke. The hill between the barn and the car is very dark and I think it should be much, much lighter since it's so far away and eventually vanish. Maybe if you change slightly the line strokes so the heavy lines creates all objects closer to the viewer and gradually lighter ones save for the background it would give your sketch more depth.
I hope you will find it helpful. I really love illustrated cows and maybe you will find it inspiring to check a book series about a cow named Millie. The illustrator's name is Alexander Steffensmeier and the way he portraits his Millie is just hilarious:)

    • RE: Thinking I am done, therefore I am sure it can be taken further

Yes! Everything is much better now! His hands matches the head!
If it comes to color the only thing I would suggest to work on are the blackest parts. Instead of pure black in this mouth I would use very dark red/pink maybe and add a little bit of saturation to his tongue. In his eyes you could use very dark blue.
Using pure black in drawings like this makes and impression that there is a hole in the drawing. the solution is to mix black with another color.

    • RE: Frog Circus WIP Thread

Hi! I really love your style! You said that you are trying to avoid overrendering which is very good idea beceause all the details on the trees are grabbing the attention. What I would suggest is darkening leaves and trees to put more emphasis on the most important part of the composition.

Great entries everyone! I’m silently following this thread and I felt a need to do my own version of Yeti 😃. There is not much time left but maybe I can come up with something nice. @LisaF Is this contest for everybody who is subscribed or previous winners are excluded?

    • RE: My style is not trending

@chrisaakins It is very interesting because when I saw your "dragonfly" piece I thought it is a very nice mix between old and new but it definitely looks modern. I think you are doing great job on incorporating new style into your art.

    • RE: Podcast topic: Burnout

@Lee-White I’m so sad because I saw this post just now and I had more questions! I once wrote under one of your youtube videos a comment in which I asked to talk about burnout and, who knows maybe because of that you chose that subject. Anyway I’m very happy to know that I can look forward to your discussion!

      Alphonso did not convince me.
I hope this situation will be solved soon because too much damage is being done to Jake’s reputation.

    • RE: Inktober Book Plagerism Accusations

I’m not from USA but recentyly I had a talk with a lawyer about owning rights to art teaching methods. He told me that it is impossible to own rights to such a thing unless you invent a very original, previously not existing way of teaching. What’s even more important you cannot own the rights to the order in which you present it nor the way you lay this out in your book.

@Pamela-Ruddy exactly, that scrolling back and forth completelty dismiss Alphonso’s argument that Jake copied the structure of his book.

@K-Flagg I think Alphonso should have thought about it for a week or two before he made his video, he really overreacted and I seriously don’t believe he himself came up with everything he mentioned in his own books, it’s impossible. Unfortunately Jake’s last youtube video is already being flooded with negative comments and accusations.
