RE: AUGUST CONTEST: SUPERSTITION
I thought it would be interesting to take an old Native American superstition that we now think of as silly, and to put it into a modern context. If having your photograph taken can steal your soul, that's a terrifying concept in selfie culture.

Is my work professional?
Hi there!
I'm preparing to send out postcards for the first time, and would love some feedback on this image that I'm considering.
Is this an image of professional quality? Does it show flair? And more importantly, do you think it tells a story?
Thank you so much! -
RE: Is my work professional?
@NessIllustration Thank you so much for taking the time to give me such great feedback!
My previous work is mostly full color character illustrations geared toward the table top gaming genre. (Example below.)
Currently, I'm focusing more for a fantasy young adult genre. I'm really influenced by Jim Kay's earlier black and white work and Patrick Arrasmith's work on The Last Apprentice series.
Do you think postcards featuring character work might get a better response from editors?
Thanks again. I appreciate your insights! -
Critique on last 20%
Hi All!
I feel that I'm nearing the end on this piece, and I like the direction of it. But as Lee says, he often sees beginning illustrators leave a piece without finishing that last 20%. I'm posting my original sketch, a process shot of about half way done, and where I am now.
I have questions about the boy and the dog. Something seems wrong about them. Is it the shadows? Do they look too stiff? I'm also wondering about the windows and doorways in the closest building. They seem wonky. Why? Is it not shadowed enough, or is the perspective off? I'd also love any general suggestions on what you think might help this piece feel nice and polished. Thanks!

RE: My books arrived 😄 + Question
@nadyart I don't have any experience regarding sales from crowdfunding, but I just had to say that your book is stunningly beautiful! Thanks for putting in a link to your Instagram so I could see more of your work!

Yes! I agree with CLCandyArts. A link to the zoom meeting in this thread would be very helpful!

RE: Superstition WIP – Apple a Day ... (critique/comments please)
I love the chewing face on your guy! It's really funny and well rendered. I have a question for you to consider about your story- The apples are supposed to keep the doctor away, but he has a set date for a doctor's appointment on the calendar already. He's already going, so the apples aren't keeping the doctor away.
Is it worth doing a thumbnail where your story is focused on the doctor? Maybe he's trying to hide the apples in the supermarket, or stop an apple shipment because the apples are causing him to lose all his patients.
I really like your idea!

Superstition Question
Hi SVS-ers!
For an illustration about a more obscure superstition, do you think a brief explanation should be posted on a boarder on the image, or just in a comment in the post?
Thanks!

RE: Can't figure out how to get link to today's critique
@KathrynAdebayo That's strange. I received an email from Lisa this morning with the link after I posted this question to the forum.
Try emailing their general support email address. I'll bet you get a pretty prompt response: support@svslearn.com

Can't figure out how to get link to today's critique
Hi friends! I'm excited for today's critique, but I can't figure out how to get the link to it.
I'm a subscriber, but my emails about the Summer Vacation critique session keeps saying, "Subscribe to get the event link."
Can someone help me out and let me know what I'm missing?
Thanks!
