    Jade Yaert

    @Jade Yaert

Hi! I’m Jade. I’m a (in the process of becoming) self thought illustrator from Belgium. I have always wanted to be an illustrator, and have always been studying illustration on the side. But life happens and there are only so many hours in the day. So progress was slow.

Which is why, in september I decided to leave Belgium ( I got a remote, part time job to cover living expenses) and go ‘travel’ for the next couple of years. I do an extreme form of slow travel, by housesitting long term sits. Enabling me to fully focus on studying illustration with a lower cost of living then being in Belgium.
I joined svs as a way of having a focussed, clear-cut curriculum, that will help me study all I can, and as a place to connect with other illustrators. As I really love to talk and meet people with similar dreams and passions.

    About me:
Like: 4 seasons, interior monologues, family, books, history, nature, philosophy, animals
Dislike: The words: ‘I’ll never be able to do that’ (within reason)

      Content to just be quiet

@xin-li I love that! And it is so true. And something that doesn’t make sense or is viewed in some way by someone can be seen as a totally different thing by another person.

I also notice this when watching children draw. They come over and proudly show their drawing. And for me its just these vibrant and lively set of lines and scribbles. And then you ask what they drew, and they start telling this amazing story. Like ‘it’s the ocean. But this is a pirate and he took this frog against his will. But he’s climbing the ladder to escape...’
And it is just brilliant to see how they are conveying these stories and their own meaning in their drawing. Just like when they are interpreting other people drawings. Always full of surprises !

Personally I like the grid with more spacing as in your original upload. It is more visually pleasing to my eye. On the other hand, i do think that that one looks more like a static portfolio grid instead of a zoom or skype call, so i would get why you’d want to space it differently. If you go with closer spacing i like the 3x3 grid most 🙂

      Love the idea btw!

    • RE: Starting from Scratch - Classmates?

      Hi!
I am new here as well, and feel like I’m in a similar situation. Been drawing forever but never really focussed on the basics, so without reference pictures i get lost and in general there are lot’s of areas where i’ll have to do work arounds or other compositions because ‘i cant draw that yet’. Im going to start from scratch with these lessons, as I think it’ll be the best way to really brush up on everything & make sure I don’t skip any basics.

I do have a bit more time to work on illustration as I specifically reduced my job to a part time to get into illustration properly, so i have 4 days a week where i try to do illustration all day. But this also includes working on personal projects, so i doubt I’ll go through the classwork that fast. But as you said: aim high!

So if you’d have me, I’d really love joining the group. If you’d rather keep it small & closed, not a problem of course!

    • Hi! I’m new here & looking for groups/classmates to join?

      Hi!
I’m Jade & I’m really excited to join the SVS community.
I’ve been browsing the forum to see what is discussed and how things work around here. Is there a definitive faq or something? So that I don’t break any forum etiquette when responding in the different threads?

Besides the educational value, a big reason for joining svs is that I’m really looking for a community of like minded people to connect with and share our artwork and passion for illustration! As I’m studying by myself I really miss this network of other artists that you find in art school.

Are there any groups here of people following along with the same classes? Or something that constitutes as a group where you work on the same thing, f.ex perspective/values. Or focussed critique groups? Or is the forum more general?

Sorry if these are silly questions or if they are all answered in a predefined guide. I’ve looked but cant seem to find one immediately.

      About me & illustration:
I’m Jade, from Belgium. I love hot drinks, cozy things, small happiness and drawing. (And loads of other things, but choices have to be made, this is already a wordy message)

I’m trying to emulate an art school education without actually having to attend art school (don’t get me wrong, i would love too, but it is too expensive and not feasible at this time). So the last couple of years I have been trying the home school method, to see how far that will bring me.

I am currently slow traveling around the world (doing housesits to live rent free and still have the beauty of pets around me) , as a way to really be able to focus on studying and hopefully one day get into illustration professionally. (As living expenses in Belgium are really high, this type of slow travel enables me to only work part time and be able to study illustration about 54 hours a week. But that is a whole different topic)

I would love to meet you all, so feel free to introduce yourselves! If you have an instagram or something where you share your artwork, feel free to share! Seeing people create beautiful and/or powerful images is my bliss.

@charitymunoz said in Podcast recommendation request?:

      This thread is amazing.
I can't think of any other recomendations except the artcurious podcast which is a podcast about art history that I personally really enjoyed. (the only downside is that there are about 2 ads every episode that clash with the general atmosphere of the episodes).

Despite only having one suggestion, I definitely was able to update my own reading/listening list with all your amazing suggestions. Thanks everyone!

      Hi Shelley!
I get what you are saying, i love my friends to bits, and they are creative in their own way, but you can’t talk about illustration all the time (esp the specifics and techniques you’re working on or new art philosophy books you’re reading) without the conversation being one sided.

I’m a true European at heart. I love travelling but I can’t see me permanently living anywhere but somewhere in Europe. Where would you like to move to?

    • RE: XPen artist display

As I decided this year to do perpetual traveling while studying illustration, i had the same issue. I needed something with a display, that could create nice linework, without jitter, and in my case portable. I had a cintiq16+photoshop, but you needed a strong pc to hook it up and it was not portable. For the rest it did work really well and the price point was around 500euros in sale.

Personally I sold that one and went with an ipad pro for portability, even though i dislike apple products in general (the way they suck you in their ecosystem) but their products do work well and i am loving the drawing experience I have on the ipad+I can draw everywhere. It has quadrupled my drawing time tbh.

They are very pricey however so i wouldn’t be recommending them. If not that they just announced that their newest ipadair (which has a way lower price point) has all these upgrades making it really suited for illustration as it now supports their apple pencil 2.

I was bummed out over that announcement having just spend so much on the ipad pro but it should be very interesting to look into if you are comparing drawing tablets.

I tried out lots of standalone drawing tablets when deciding on what to do and personally i think the ipad is best if you wanted an all in one device, otherwise i’d go with the cintiq 16. I also tried the surface line before going apple, but the jitter on my linework was just horrible.

Ps: what software you wanna use also plays an important role as going ipad means that you can’t use Photoshop if you are used to that. They have an app, but i haven’t tried it out yet. If you happen to have a MacBook though, you can connect your ipad to your macbook and use it as a display drawing tablet giving you the best of both worlds. Ipad and procreate in the couch, photoshop on macbook with ipad as display at your desk. Or so i believe. I read that that was possible but i don’t have a macbook so I haven’t been able to test it out.

If your price point is lower than 500 btw, then im sorry for my rambling here as both of these options are 500+
