RE: My Very First Postcard
@Amber-Lynn-Benton cute! Snow tires made me lol
I have mine leftover from scbwi conference I still need to mail out. Mine from Moo are coated on the art side that make pens difficult on it, just something I noticed if you are planning on writing on it!
NESCBWI Critique results
I went to the New England SCBWI conference last weekend and learned a lot but whew it was exhausting and expensive. This critique that I got on my portfolio was helpful but a LOT of it was also covered in their workshop so it really put me in my place on how I'm not even to the entry level part yet (sadface). The pics were just taken with my phone to send to my husband but if they are too hard to read I will redo them!
I took a pic of my illustration in the challenge set up but I didn't take a pic of my portfolio in the gallery. It's about the same as on my website though www.heatherbouteneff.com
The first salamander 2 page spread image was in my dummy, now that I'm home I'm working on the second one (and getting a little stuck but trying to work through it. I got the best feedback on this red salamander character and page which I guess is good I guess since it's my most recent. Hope that helps! Go draw lots of characters looking not content and babies but not creepy ones!
RE: Hello, I'm Amber!
hi Amber! I love love love your style and your story, I'm in the exact same boat except I'm 41 with one turning 2 and my oldest with special needs turning 14 this summer. It puts a different spin on things that is tricky since it's not a cookie cutter road!
Welcome and I can't wait to see what you do next!
RE: Dummy illustration how to seperate from background
@Lee-White I think this is absolutely a learning piece and I will have to redo it to get it to fit. Ironically I am just about to do that with the text for the book dummy too because it's my one rhyming one and apparently rhyming books from beginning authors are like a big joke.
I literally painted myself into a corner with it by doing the background as food that is supposed to look good. Changing almost any of it made it look unappetizing and this is supposed to be the part of the book where he's just so in love with cooking it's like 70's flower fest. I have to admit I just ended up Lisa Franking it for now just to put it on the shelf and be able to face a redo.
RE: Library printer
@Johanna-Kim I always find myself trying to make up a story to rationalize someones actions when they act like that.
I'm pretty sure this guy was in the back room just about to take a giant first bite out of his very very most favorite sardine and pickle and head cheese sandwich (on pineapple bread, of course) and I walked in all languid and indecisive and so obviously not a proper New Englander with my y'alls and shucks. He must have been so very distracted and annoyed.
