Cheers for another great episode, really made me want to dig into my own influences.
Was looking up books mentioned and found this from an amazon review of "Real Artists Don't Starve" by Jeff Goins:
Each principle (which Goins sets out in the intro) is one of the chapters in the book. The book is also free with an audible trial which I'll def be checking out.
Hope fellow listeners find it useful!

I heard that elephants are afraid of bees. Farmers even use bees to protect crops. Turns out a bees sting can't pierce elephant hide. So I guess you can say its an elephant's superstition!
My idea was to illustrate an elephant being afraid of a bee, but make the bee look harmless. I drew 4 versions. Which one do you think is most expressive? Which tells the best story? Critiques are super appreciated.
(Also shoutout to Aaron Blaise's how to draw elephants pdf. You can get by subscribing to his mailing list found it very helpful)
@burvantill Good shout, I've been on a bit of a binge. Thanks!
@aaron-pierce Theres something about a tinkering little frog dude in outerspace which is very appealing. I'd draw more of this fella, see what he gets up to
Great episode! About money-success discussion at the beginning, to complicate things a little, here is a talk which discusses research showing how money is a terrible motivator for creative tasks:

Hi all!
Here is my submission for June SVS prompt and would love any general or specific feedback. If there's one things you had to change, what would it be?
The first image is retouched with photoshop, second is the original.
"Bongo kept lowering his tail more and more as Clyde raised his head out of the water."
Things I was thinking:
-Struggled with the background/foreground separation (depth?). Do you guys start with the background and then insert the characters?
-How are the expressions? Want Bongo to look like he's having fun, Clyde to look annoyed
-Bongo pose- stiff or loosey goosey? Is it clear?
-How far away is this from a 'portfolio piece'?
Probably should have asked for feedback earlier in the process, but struggle finishing things so just went for it u know. Hope this isn't considered bad form
Really appreciate the time to look at my work
Cheers!

p.s- how do you guys do that thing where you link to your social media at the bottom? Is there a way to do this automatically?
On Harry Potter illustrations, Jim Kay is doing the most amazing illustrated versions of HP books in the UK. Basically a picture book with words crazy stuff definitely check it out.
Very energetic guy, great lecture where he talks about his process, finding textures---> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDPcGdt40RU
Always in awe with the art heritage surrounding HP, Star Wars, LOTR...
Congrats on the Kickstarter Will!
@xin-li I really like it. Personally I would have maybe just a couple of figures looking up at the boat (maybe a mother + daughter?) But I think this depends where in the story this moment is- if its at the end more of a crowd could work, picks up the drama. If it is more of an introductory scene I say have less figures, keep the focus on father/son
The buildings look great. The sail reminds me of a crescent moon, don't know if this was intentional, i think it's a charming detail

@Kat Yeah I think I'm leaning third as well. Hadn't thought of putting in the farmer and i think that would tell more of a story, will def sketch it out. Cheers
