    • RE: Own Voices

I am an artist living with a physical disability from birth. At the same time, I am a white male. As a disabled person, I am comfortable with a fully physically abled person in writing about a character with a disability. Though I want the writer/illustrator to do some research about people living with disabilities or at least interact with a person (the more people with different types of disabilities the better) on a regular basis. This is just good writing/illustration practice.
Yes, I want people of other races than my own to have a say and create stories featuring their own lives, people, and personal opinions. I want them to make transformative work that shows the rest of the world new and inventive ways in story-telling.

Hi 👋 thanks for making this class. I was intimidated by vehicles, though I am enjoying the class, you make them fun to draw. I did the first assignment and look forward to doing more.

On a side not my perspective is something I struggle with though dealing with mechanical things such as cars and boats have been helping me think about perspective more.

    • Working on the 50 object challenge, love some feed back.

      Hi folks.
I have been doing the #50 objects challenge following Will Terry's videos. I'm wondering if anybody else is doing it? If there is another place on the forums I should be posting rather than here? If so let me know, I'd love to provide feedback.

I chose to do a video game store. I got through the main concept stage and now I am looking at examples and trying to get the objects more accurate.

@tyson-ranes if you have the svs subscription Will Terry just did a video series about color and story telling. It helped me so much with defining things in my paintings with color. you might want to check it out.

I fixed the legs. She still seems to be on a ledge. Though I think she looks like she belongs there (not as odd, like the earlier version). Thanks for the input everyone.

    • Sequential art for social media that's not a comic.

      Hi folks,
I have been working combining Images with writing that has some kind of narrative. The following is a series of 4 slides that I put on my Instagram.

I've been learning a lot from watching the videos here at SVS. The children's book writing and illustration video series in particular. The big lesson I'm taking from that is making your illustration tell a different story from your text.

I figure so many people use there phones and devices. I could see a Father (for example) sharing this with his daughter as a form of encouragement, or just as an act of love. Maybe its the designer in me but I like thinking how the end product might be used. I'm also thinking of doing more of things like this to help build my children's book portfolio, a way to generate interest in my work.

Just wondering if you all think that might be effective. Thanks for letting me show my work.

    • I was playing around with dot eyes and more realistic looking eyes

      Hi Folks,
I been watching and learning from the video's found on SVS while I was engrossed in a project. When I was putting the prettiest dot eyes on my cat figure Will Terry was talking about how hard it is to work with dot eyes. I believe it was one of the third Thursday videos.
So I tried something out. I finished the piece with the Dot eyes. I then duplicated the main layer and painted in more realistic eyes on my dog and cat.
I feel the addition of these eyes and eye brows added a lot to the scene. Before it was a sweet image of two pets dancing. By adding the expressive eyes I can see the cat as having some swagger and the pug dog looking dumb founded.

      Just some food for thought.

@cory-shaw Thanks, Cory. Good point on the Father's point of view. I tend to do that when I write and create it's in a vacuum. In my brain, Its the sweetest nicest thing and I don't think "Oh if a Dad read it to his daughter he might not want his kid think she looks funny"
I really should look and ask before I post. Thanks for the input it will help me grow.

Hi, I love this. The bears have so much character, love the poses.

Because you asked I would make the following change:

The bear holding the tree looks slightly turning while the tree looks straight on. The hanging bear seems to be on the same plain as the bear holding the pine tree and it slightly conflicts with each other. It is more visually engaging if the hanging bear's leg and body were behind the bear carrying the tree.

I really like this style. It is very whimsical and professional. Alice and Wonderland is such a tried and true staple of children's books that it can look very samey. You have made it your own. Good luck.

Great image. I see to the left you have another kids face. Are you having two kids in the scene? I think it would look better with just the one. I really like the idea. Great job.

    • Greatest Fear WIP

I was working on these thumbs for the worst fear challenge. I thought it is interesting to illustrate fear its self from FDR's First inauguration address. The following is the passage from where I am taking the details/ discription of fear.

So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is...fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life, a leadership of frankness and of vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory.

I am curious to hear your input of which thumbnail you all like and feel would work best. Thanks for your help.
