I am trying to improve my skills, and am finally asking a question I've been wondering for a long time. When I see cartoons, I always wonder how the lines are kept so clean, so straight/smooth, and how the coloring is done so precisely. Please see below.
How are the lines drawn so straight and smooth? Do animators actually use a ruler? (I assume cartoons are usually done digitally nowadays, but in either case!) To follow up, if the line cannot be completed in one stroke, how is it managed that you never see any "joining points" where two lines meet? And finally- how are things like circles drawn, such as their eyes? By practicing one can draw near-perfect circles — but not perfectly, every time.
How is the coloring done? For example, looking at his sleeve, the darker shadow color has a perfect curve, and does not touch the lines. At the moment I'm just trying to use a brush which is pressure sensitive, and as you can imagine, does not get the same results!
I know these are very basic skills to have, which I do not know how to do. It amazes me when I watch these shows how everything is so clean.
Thank you! Austin
