Graphic Arts Guild Handbook versus membership
-
I was going to order the most recent edition of the Graphic Arts guild handbook and noticed that I would get an updates edition if I was a member of the Guild. I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on being a member or if just getting the handbook is enough? Looking for more pricing guidelines and sample contracts as I am setting up my business! Thank you

@Coley the handbooks great, I’m considering joining on the strength of their handbook and for the help they give with US contracts. I live in the U.K. and the association I’ve joined doesn’t deal with US contracts.
I would definitely join if I was in the US. -
@peteolczyk thanks. I'm in Canada, I wonder if it still applies to Canada at all? hmmm

@Coley I had a look I can’t find anything on their site. Is it worth emailing them?

@peteolczyk I think I'm going to order it and use what I can and adjust what I can. Looks like I would get a lot out of it!

I was a member of the Guild the first 5 years of my professional career. I continue to recommend PEGS (Pricing and Ethical Guidelines) to my illustration students each term. Lots of information for those starting out! I will even now consult it with questions that arise from time to time.
All organizations change over time and I will confess that it's been years since I was a member. There was a local chapter here in Portland that I initially attended, but it was unimpressive. The national organization had both good and bad things going for it. Much too much drama at the time. But again that was years ago. It may well be much more active and focused these days.

@davidhohn thanks David, it sounds like their book’s so good you can get by on it without having to join.
