WIP “love” pattern collection

This month’s challenge I’m going to make a pattern collection. I envision it being for a wedding or a bridal shower. Just trying to make a “lovely” collection. Maybe I’ll even mock up plates and cocktail napkins. I know for sure it will be turned into a note card set for Mother’s Day. So- here is the start.

    One more.
The goal is to have 8-12 patterns that are related. A few are show stoppers. Then there is a mid range of contrast and involvement. Then there are “blender” pieces. Also there will be a range of values in the set. Some of these are elements that will be further manipulated in photoshop.

  • These are absolutely lovely! I bet they would look really precious as edible printed cake decorations, you know? For weddings, a tea, a garden party... These are really nice! Keep going! 🙂

  • Whitney, they are very lovely!!

  • @Coreyartus that sounds like a awesome idea! If I had napkins that matched my cake I may just die a happy person! That would be freaking adorable!

    @NessIllustration thank you!

There is quite a bit I want to make with these guys. Hopefully it turns out like I see it in my head!

  • That top pattern is amazing, the symmetry by hand is awesome!

  • oh wow! A pattern series is a great idea. I'll have to try my hand at that sometime 🙂

  • @Chip-Valecek thanks. We will see if it translated to the pattern. Once it’s duplicated sometimes the flow can be tricky. I’m still super new at the repeating pattern process.

@Braden-Hallett start the pattern next theme. Ha! But they are super fun. Totally worth exploring.

  • Very nice work

Finally able to work a little on then collection. Not sure exactly how the tiny elements will be used. I am thinking a pattern print. Maybe, if the individual elements are strong enough, a banner or bunting. After these are done I’m going to do an ink only version of these elements. I see coloring them in photoshop in white against a colored background. Also, want to do a text print too if probably the word “love” or “I love you” in a bunch of different languages. That can be used more universally than just a wedding.

I pieced it together. Ohhhh. So excited. Not sure if I will try it in other colors or change up the background. As for the shapes and patterns I am super happy.

  • purple tulips full pattern first attempt but not a tile copy.jpg

First attempt at overlapping repeating patterns after watching Ohn Mar Win. yikes. This may take a while to get right.

  • white outlines and wedding items combined.jpg

I am pretty stoked about the white outlines. How fun it that. I did them in black and changed them to white in photoshop. Some elements I need to revisit, like the dress and pearls and a few others. However, I'm digging the bouquet and the cake!

Making Baby steps in the process of making seemless repeating patterns. Yay!

Still would love any comments, critiques or tips. This is a collection I really want to be strong.

  • Those seamless repeating patterns are absolutely lovely!!! I'm a theatrical costume designer by trade, and I can totally see both of those as cute little sun dresses! The orange floral would look gorgeous as a tiny rayon challis print for a breezy shift dress, and those red poppies are begging to be a cotton a-line cut dress for an afternoon tea!!

Seriously--please do something with these. I know fabric printing is a hard market to get into because there's a lot out there already, but these are just adorable!!

  • @Coreyartus thank you so much! I hope to get licensed at some point. My goal is by December 2021. That will be 20 years since I received my BFA. Just a silly timeline.

I hope this will be the first of the finished pattern collections to pitch to manufactures. I have a few collections that aren’t patterns I want to go and revisit and complete. And still create a few collections from new artwork.

I will at least upload these to spoonflower and get some of the fabric for myself. They say you should create work that you want. And I totally want some of these!

Your work is stunning! I’m sure you already know that. But what a talent to be able to create costumes like that! Your artwork is great too. I think I need to do a 100 hands project!

  • @Whitney-Simms wow, love all of these! What will you do with them? just gorgeous 🙂

  • @Coley thanks!
I’ll make notecards for sure. I print those at home and will sell them. I’ll make a mother’s day card to go with the set. Almost like a gift with purchase when you buy a set of 8.
Then I may upload them to spoonflower for fabric. It’s a print on demand place.
After that they will just be used as a portfolio set on my website. At some point I hope they will be licensed turned into paper tablewear, or fabric or anything really. I’ll probably do some mock ups for a party set, plates and napkins, gift bags? But who knows.

  • @Whitney-Simms I think those are great ideas, they're really nice! 🙂

  • leaf pattern copy.jpg

Here is the leaf pattern. I don't really like the background color. I am not sure if I should just paint one and put that behind it. Maybe a slight texture similar to the blush wedding items? That one has two layers in the background. I just hate every piece to have a textured background. In other collections that I see it doesn't have that. What do you guys think?
