Lurker Introduction
-
Hello! My name is Margaret and I'm 21 years old. I've been lurking on the forums for about a year now and finally got up the courage to introduce myself--you all seem very friendly and supportive! This is what I'm looking for in an art community.
I'm an amateur artist looking to become either an illustrator or art therapist. I originally wanted to study psychology, but at the last minute decided to try graphic design. Well, I floundered about in my design classes for a bit, but it wasn't that they were too hard- they were too easy. So I left graphic design and have been working on my art and illustration skills in and out of college (mostly out of college, self-teaching) for the past year or so.
I am working on my fundamentals, right now composition. I have a good grasp of perspective, digital art basics, and line/shape. I desperately need help with tone and light and shadow. I've actually never filled a sketchbook so I just bought two new ones to start filling with SVS class exercises and things. I'd like to go back to college and finish my BFA in Illustration. Even though I know it's all about the portfolio, taking classes helps me focus my studies and art and keep working towards my goals. I don't really have any art to share right now as I'm mostly working on theory and not practical at the moment.
I'd love to create a positive affirmation/feel good oracle deck, where either by myself or in collaboration with others it would be drawn out and designed and printed, then possibly sold or donated.
I'm pretty shy but I would love to have some art friends on here. I know the majority of you are much more advanced than I am, however I would really enjoy having some conversations with all of you!
Lots of love,
Margaret -

@artistmaggiee Hi Margaret and welcome! I'm glad you introduced yourself, it's very exciting to be at the beginning stages of your art journey. I've found this community to be great, super supportive and it's been a help to motivate me to keep working outside of the school or work environment. I encourage you to share even your theoretical exercises too, maybe in a sketchbook thread or something. I have found tremendous value in just putting things out there, no matter what state it is in.
Welcome!

Welcome to the forum!

@artistmaggiee Greetings!
I'm pretty new on the forums as well, but you are right everyone is very supportive.
It's also a great place to get critiques! I went to school for graphic design with a concentration in illustration. I understand where you are coming from. I like graphic design, but I should have focused more on illustration. Anyway, the one thing I really missed about school was the critiques, but this place is filled with people that offer constructive criticism.
So, hopefully, we get to see some of your work!

Welcome. I too wanted to try art in psychology, especially for children. But went a different route. Now Ive come full circle and am going for children’s book illustrator. Helping little minds that way.
