SLOW work in progress

  • I'm doing this illustration for The SVS Learn November contest, "Slow", and the SCBWI November contest, "Ritual". This is where I'm at so far. I thought it would be a good stopping point to get feedback, before I delve much deeper.
I'm going to do this whole thing in Procreate 😳.

  • @burvantill

I like it so far! Great composition with the massive turkey shape in the foreground.

The only thing I could think of to do was to hunt for tangents, but the ones I found were pretty minor (like the right side of the dining table lamp butting up against the vertical window bit or the string from the kitchen light against the cookie jar on top of the cabinets). MAYBE the kid's nose in the foreground is a tangent with the turkey? Maybe?

I'm looking foreward to seeing this one as it comes along πŸ™‚

  • @art-of-b ah! I see those, now, 😜 Thankyou. I kinda wanted to show more of the child peeking at the turkey anyway, so I can move her up a bit to remove that little Bermuda Triangle that is glaring at me now. Lol!

  • So being a newbie in some ways, I must ask, what is the definition of a tangent?

  • @chrisaakins

    This guide's not bad:

    GUIDE!

Basically it's when lines interact in such a way that it's difficult to tell what object they belong to, connect in weird ways or kinda fuse objects together.

They tend to sneak in even if you're super careful, especially when you have distinct line work.

  • I really like how much is going on here, and all the props and such you've added in, and I think it looks great over all. The kid in the foreground made me chuckle. The one thing I would work on is the posing of the dad... he seems kind of stiff.

  • @twiggyt I agree about the dad. The two other people in the far back as well. πŸ‘

  • @art-of-b That is a great guide! It perfectly explains tangents. I never knew all the names to call them. πŸ‘πŸ˜Ž

  • Nice work so far. Love the concept and the sketch is nice. I would try to introduce more angles. Right now you have the horizontal and vertical edges of everything lining up with the image frame and it gives the room a little bit of a stiff feeling.

  • So I had a bit of a hicup yesterday. I’ve been plugging along in procreate and.. I’m not exactly sure how it happened but I lost a huge layer. πŸ™€
I think it happened when I merged two layers while being zoomed in and one of the layers was turned off. I didn’t realize my mistake until a while later. And when I went to undo about a hundred times my procreate crashed and I lost the ability to undo to get the layer back.😑
I’m calm now. I am redrawing everything with pencil and ink IRL since it’s faster for me at this stage and the deadline is encroaching. 😳πŸ€ͺ

  • Oh no! So sorry that happened. On the bright side anytime I’m forced to do anything over against my will it turns out better the second time. I hope that happens for you!

  • @burvantill OH NO!!!! That's horrid! Glad you have been able to gather yourself and move onward and upward. I merged away all my line work for a big piece of my last drawing. It was sad times. The joys and pains of digital work. Good luck with the rest. ☺

  • @burvantill I had something similar happen to me. I attempted to merge a TON of layers at the same time. Procreate does NOT like this. It crashed, I went back in, all undo history was gone. Image was flattened.

So lesson here is, be very careful when merging layers. And if you're going to do a big merge for whatever reason, maybe make a duplicate of the file first.

  • @branden-brushett No! That sucks. I'm in Photoshop with it now. I'm still a rookie in Procreate so I'm much more comfortable now, I can catch back up before Turkey day hits. πŸ¦ƒπŸ˜³

I finished my redraw with Ink today and brought it into Photoshop. I'm currently blocking the values. After redrawing it IRL, I realized how incredibly slow I still am in Procreate. I'm calling it a night.
