Swift_SCBWI September prompt and beyond

My vote is on 7 as well!

  • 6, 7, and 8 read the clearest to me.

  • SVS OG

I like #7 best too, followed by 8 and then 6...I like the fact that in #7 you can see the whole line of the lasso, and the silhouette of the man in red is strongest. Great idea!

  • I like eight the best πŸ™‚ The winged donkey-pony are a clear focal point in this composition, and it tells a very interesting story. I like 7 too, but I think eight reads more immediately. Hoping you have time to finish this, even if it's not in time for third thursday πŸ™‚

  • SVS OG

Number 7 looks the best to me. πŸ™‚

  • I like 6 and 7! I prefer the horse in 7 but the flying contraption in 6 πŸ™‚

Thank you all for your input!! The winners are clearly the one with the clearest action. Yet, I am somewhat enamored with 5...Anybody to be convinced for that?
Meanwhile, since this illustration requires a lot of design work (characters, vehicle, comp, color, etc...), I have drafted something much simpler (taking a leaf out of Will TerryΒ΄s book) for Third Thursday that I may actually be able to finish in time....Input welcome! And of course the image is designed to make you wonder: who of the two is Thomas?

  • Pro SVS OG

Now that I look at them better, number 5 is actually number 6, inverted and a little more compact. So I will go with number 6! Thank you everybody for your insight.

First and second pass. I am experimenting with different rendering processes - so not sure how far to bring this....

Nice work. I definitely feel the tension on this piece. Good story telling. The only thing I would add is that maybe I want to see a little clearer what the baby is after. What is so tempting that the baby just had to have it?

  • Pro SVS OG

@evilrobot Gummi-bears! Though will be clearer after the next pass πŸ˜‰

  • This post is deleted!

  • Just want to say...I really love everything you do. I look forward to your posts!

So, this is finished now and I will get back to the illustration with which I started this post before ending down another road. I am going to count this also towards the 100Kids project, since I experimented with a rendering style I am completely new to: digital watercolor, albeit with a very simplified approach (just one brush on ProCreate).
I made a short video that discusses the process a little and also shows the SketchUp maquette I used as reference. There has been some discussion about SketchUp on the forum (and Jake shows it in the course about Creative Environment Design). I use SketchUp quite often (and ZBrush too, though not recently) and really love how it helps to generate and refine ideas!
Anyhow, if you want to check out the video, it is linked here:

Link to blog that links to video πŸ˜‰

    Looks good!

  • 7 does the best job with tones and focus of action, I think,

  • @smceccarelli wow, I love it! You can really sense the tension in this piece. The watercolor effect is spot on.
    best of Luck!

Sorry for mixing up things in this post. I got sidetracked and since I am always working on many projects at the same time, I flow from one to the other without structure sometimes...
So I changed the title of the topic, as I am going to continue with the air-trike illustration and try to submit it to the SCBWI prompt of August-September, which is "Swift".
Meanwhile, as I was developing some characters for this illustration, it evolved into a full lineup, and I really liked the characters, so I am probably going to use them for more than one illustration. No real story at the moment, only got the goodies and the badies sorted out....and the fact that Bruise and his sidekick Coco really want to get hold of Donky for some unclear purpose. I still need to design their flying vehicle (which will be named "Flytrap").
Glad to hear thoughts or suggestions for storylines!

Wow I love it - they all look really fun and interesting! My eye is really drawn to the donkey...love his face and little wings! I also like the way the goat is very effectively crossed with a bird..even the goaty bits have a bird-like feel to them. Great work!

  • SVS OG

I don't think I've ever seen a mountain goat/ ram with wings...lol....these are really awesome. I think you got something here. Nice work.
