Feedback for my first Illustration
-
Hey, I need help with my first portfolio site. This will be a short story about forest animals that went on an expedition (hence the backpacks). I'm not sure yet if they're going camping or on a city trip. This is one of my first illustrations, and I need some advice on the mistakes I made. Should I leave the background white or draw a forest or some elements in the background?.
Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Monika,
You have some cute characters here. And the story is good. But without the story, there is nothing in this illustration that says what the characters are doing. Most of the characters are quite stiff with very little emotion. Hope you don't mind, but I created the attached sketch to give you one idea of how to illustrate your story. It is not complete, but I think there is enough to start.Based on what I see, the small racoon has a question or concern, so I have him trying to catch up with the fox. I put the 2 mice closer together to complete their story (I guess the older mouse doesn't want to share his cheese?). And I have the bear distracted by a butterfly. You could do similar "mini-stories" with the deer and wolf.
Do be conscious of how you pose your characters and the emotions they are showing based on the story. Both the deer and wolf are in odd poses or unnatural body shapes, and I don't think the deer would be smiling at the mice arguing over the cheese.
I see now that the wolf may be trying to steal the other stick of cheese. Not sure that fits if this is a group of friends out on an adventure together.
Hope this is helpful!
