Calling the new Dorothy done - i am so glad i restarted her - Thank you all for your help! I appreciate All of the feedback i received, it has made it a better piece for sure!
Yup...another Wizard of Oz piece ... i'm getting there though :) This is a work in progress - this one really gave me trouble at first but i finally hit on this composition this weekend and i'm liking it - i composed it so that they are facing to left in contrast to most of the other Oz pieces - my idea is that the crow is noticing Dorothy and crew coming toward the trees - curious if the composition is working for folks? Still lots of work to do - any feedback always appreciated :)
Hope everyone is not sick of my Wizard of Oz pieces - but here is yet another(got a lot done on these snow days!) This is the Mouse Queen that helps to save the Cowardly Lion form the poppy field - think i'm close to finish on this - but i think i'm not seeing it clearly anymore and cannot see the obvious anymore - any feedback would be much appreciated :)
Pretty sure i would have a stack of doodles like the first image below if it was not for working digitally - forever grateful for finding SVS! I feel like i am about finished with this one - let me know if there are any glaring issues with it that i am missing - i'm feeling like it fits in well with the rest of the images in the series - this is the Monkey king with the Golden Cap in his posession - One more to go! (need to finish the Kalidah : )
Hello all - that is a very click bait'ish title isn't it :) thought i would share a couple pics from a group show opening today at the Helzer gallery here in Oregon - i submitted 3 drawings for the show and one made it in - the one they chose was from the 3rd thursday prompt with Willie and his rescue - i was happily surprised they accepted a digital drawing actually - there are forty pieces in the show to celebrate Portland Community College's 40th year - anyways....felt pretty cool to see it on the wall in a modern space - here is a picture of someone i don't know looking at my piece and also of the gallery space :)
Hello all - i miss having the thread where we used to all post our submissions as we completed them for 3rd Thursday - so i was thinking i should just start it myself and see if anyone is interested :)
here is my entry ... this is me trying to be less dark :)
Ever feel like you've forgotten how to draw? That is how i start and sometimes end my drawings :) anyways.. Here is the gate keeper again... hopefully i have not taken the life out of him - i wanted him to seem small - i imagined him wearing an oversized ceremonial military type uniform - i think i am close to finished on him - i added a group photo of what i have so far too - Good witch of the North (to the right of OZ)stands out as needing work and possibly Glinda too (below fireball) - still have not made Dorothy younger which was the feedback from 3rd Thursday - also need to change the chair under Oz to a stone throne - otherwise i'm pretty happy with this project so far - oddly i think the Mouse Queen is my favorite :)
Here is what i've got so far - Still have a Lot of work to do - have not really nailed down the poses for the mermaid and merman - went through many variations but i like the feel of this one - so the idea is the mermaid is rescuing the merman from the giant eel with the snapping turtle head :) I know there is some confusing anatomy but my idea is that the merman was once a man and that he chose to become a merman for his beloved....and now she is in danger of losing him - need to sort out many other things but i am liking this composition - the eel was originally facing the two but there seemed to be no way they could possibly escape - turning the eel away really helped the story i think - anyways - thanks for looking - any feedback is alway much appreciated :)
In the Third Thursday Critique video from from August 2016 (i know .. that is a while ago :) i got some really awesome feedback from the SVS team - the most prominent of which was that my Dorothy was too old and needed to be younger - i feel like i am more confident with faces now and i'm giving it a go - i posted this work in progress on my site and am wondering what folks thoughts might be (they are side-by-side there) kevinlongueil.com
I think i am almost there - wondering if there is any last minute advice anyone could share - i'm not sure about the little flag on the school - i had it saying "SVS" on the flag at first but i thought that might be a bad idea and painted it out - thank you all for your help!
Here is another Oz piece i am working on - this is the Oz that the Tin Man sees when he asks for a heart. Took a bit to come up with a design that was not awful. I think i am about finished with this lovely fellow - the description in the book reads -
"But when the Woodman entered the great Throne Room he saw neither the Head nor the Lady, for Oz had taken the shape of a most terrible Beast. It was nearly as big as an elephant, and the green throne seemed hardly strong enough to hold its weight. The Beast had a head like that of a rhinoceros, only there were five eyes in its face. There were five long arms growing out of its body, and it also had five long, slim legs. Thick, woolly hair covered every part of it, and a more dreadful-looking monster could not be imagined"
But ultimately it turns out to be stacks of furs that the Wizard used to fool the Tin Man..... so i decided to draw what the Tin Man thought he saw instead of the pile of furs that look like a monster...i think i feel good about this decision - anyways ..comments and critique always much appreciated :)
Here is a piece i have been chipping away at - i have not posted anything but wind in quite a while so i thought i should share my own struggles - it is a bit scribbly still - i know have things to resolve for sure (like the figures near the boat) - but i was hoping for some feedback from folks....one question i do have is does the reflection look cheesy? - i cannot tell - really any input, advice or critique will be much appreciated - thanks!
