WIP Octopus-acrylic-critique as needed :-)

  • Decided to paint in acrylic this time. Needed a break from going through all my stuff for moving. She looks a little creepier since I added eye lashes, may need to work on the eyes again. Thanks for your comments.

I think the lighting gave it that spotty look around the face maybe. In actuality I don't think it's like that.

  • @marsha-kay-ottum-owen That is a really fun concept! I admire your dedication to pack and still find time to make art.

  • i think the oddness is that this is a fun kind of childlike style, but the mermaids face is very adult and comparatively detailed. Consider simplifying her features. https://www.etsy.com/shop/lianahee this artist has some paintings that might be good inspiration. Very cute piece and i love the octopus.

  • I really like the octopus eyes and eyelashes! They're cute, and the lashes strengthen the characterization of the octopus beautician.

For further development, I'd like to see clearer definition on the mirror and the mermaid's right hand.
The mermaid's face is highly stylized, but I think it would be more pleasing and likeable if her expression was not so exaggeratedly thrilled. I would relax her mouth slightly so that the sides/corners of her upper teeth are not exposed. To take it to the next level, I would also try to refine her gaze so that her eyes are focused just right on the mirror. It's a difficult thing to draw/paint a gaze precisely, but using a webcam on a timer to capture photos of yourself looking at something in the exact same position relative to your gaze as the mirror is to the mermaid's could help you dial it in.

I think the concept and general composition are both good. I look forward to seeing you complete this piece!

  • @sara-glennon I agree. That face is pretty crazy! :-) Thanks for the inspiration :-) Can't wait to fix it!

  • @harmonydybala Yes, I need to develope things more and especially work on that head but, I wasn't thinking so much about the mirror and hand. That was very helpful. One thing I like about acrylic is that youcan paint over things!

  • @jennyjones Thanks. I really needed a break from the stress of trying to figure out what to do next ! Also, I want to get my supplies down. I actually don't have too many colors left to choose from. Luckily I have some white gouache because I ran out of white and would have been in big trouble without it! I still have a lot to do to "perfect" it.

  • Did a bit more to try and fix it.

  • @marsha-kay-ottum-owen Still think the face looks too old but..can I mix that flesh again? Might need to work on that some more. I think I can widen the eyes, less defined cheeks and a simple smile, no chin mark....but, I don't know how it will paint over. It's getting a bit lumpy and it will be hard to match the skin tone......hmmmmm.

I ned to work on moving. I'll just turn it in as is.
