I've been trying to figure out how to digitally paint a drawing without losing the line work as well. What solutions did you find?

@evilrobot great job! @Miriam if you want to keep your line work i find trying the layer to multiple or overlay and keeping it at the top works the best. I usually do that, and then i add a layer on top of everything to start to render the forms out and that is when i paint over the line work.

I am assuming that you are drawing traditionally and painting on a scanned drawing. You can set a layer above your drawing to "Multiply" and paint on that layer, and it will keep your line work. In my experience that can get a little messy when you want to work on several layers though. Another option is to remove the white background from your drawing, so you can keep your line work on the top layer. Here is a youtube link on how to do that: https://youtu.be/QTMfpr64Jy0
Hopefully that will be helpful. :)
