@michaelmattocks Thanks for the feedback, the back leg is there, just cant see since it is dark. The bottom of him will go deeper into shadow. My process it to paint the local values and define the forms before I add the shadow and light. Once I finish Riot I will add that in. I do see what you are talking about with the chest. I will tweek that when I get back to him.
Feeling kind of ehhhhh about my illustrations lately. Pencil sketches are fun for me and relaxing most of the time. Illustration is hard. Trying to keep my chin up but getting really discouraged. I know it’s that artist brain. We probably all feel it. Anyway, here’s a recent sketch.
@Lee-White Loving the Dream portfolio class. I've been at this since SVS started but, you know sometimes life gets in the way. I've had to take a few breaks from illustrating. I'm back in full force now and starting with your class. The first image is my Fav. artist. Charles Santoso, Renata Liwska, Corey Godbey, Gris Grimly, Brian Ajhar are my favorite's of all but I love everyone on my list. They all have that sketch quality to their work. You can almost see how they started and finished at the same time.
The second image is my work. I need to work on my values and bringing more life to my images. I would really like to start focusing more on color. I have zero painting skills so I'm not sure if I should go digital or traditional with adding color. I'm leaning toward traditional. Next is a master study but I like them all so much it's hard to choose.
I'll keep posting and we'll see what happens!
Hi, I like the drawing in the sense that you have nice line work and shapes but from a composition standpoint I'm not sure what the story is because the girl seems to just be standing there looking into the sky. Is the monster dangerous? If yes then the sheep would be very noisy and active and that would make the girl take notice. Right now it looks like they are waiting for something to happen but I would consider drawing the moment when something is happening
Orgosmhurs are strange beings that resides on the peaks of the Sea if Cains many hills. Each hill a grave to some ancient king or warrior of valor might now be more than a place for ghouls and ghasts, but a home to this wanderers from the different plane, sitting unmoved upon the hilltop, strange, sweet scented mist surrounding them, as well as a curious sensation of a distant whispering. Despite their grotesque forms, they seem lulled and calm, never harassing the brave adventurers who dare to cross the vast graveyard... That is, until some misbegotten soul raise a weapon against it. It might be true, it might be not, for if anyone indeed tried to attack the otherworldly beings, none claimed it to be so. Perhaps because no one survived such an attempt. Or perhaps no one tried. Yet.
@awall I really like the direction you took the piece! I would like to point out the lighting on the pillows though, I understand there could be some reflective light but shouldn't there also be some light on the top of them? I'm definitely not an expert on lighting, that is just how I think it would be to me.

I was thinking the bird's head was in profile & about eye level, so you can see straight through the beak. That's a good point about seeing down onto the tongue or up into the palate. I will have to keep that in mind in the future.
Oh, I'm glad you thought the colors worked. I did want the rabbit to be bold and stand out. I just wasn't sure if I went too far with the contrast. The 80/20 concept makes sense.
I tried to add shadow before I added the tones. Maybe it's not enough? I wanted the light to come from the left side in a downward direction, but from a little lower angle for a soft morning light. I want to keep the image light--like a bright spring morning.

There's just one thing that is a little confusing--the music stand in front of the doorway. It took me a minute to figure out what is was and where it is located. It could almost be some rugs hanging on the railing outside, and it's hard to tell how far away from the viewer it is (making it harder to tell what the object is). It is easier to see when I clicked on the image to see it larger in a new tab, but it's still kind of floating over there, since you can't see the stand portion holding it up (and there's already the instrument next to it, where you don't really see what is supporting it).
One more thing--the two main characters could be a little sharper / clearer. If this were a photo, it looks like a selective-focus image with the springer spaniel & the U-shaped tool on the plane with the sharpest focus, and everything else slightly out of focus. So if you want to work on this some more, I would suggest making those two characters crisper and more defined. I think having more detail in the rest of the characters would also help with the contrast between the whites and the other colors. The whites are drawing more attention, but sharper, more defined details would also draw the eye & help balance it out.
Both of those comments are down to the nit-picky / refining level. Comparing this one to the previous versions, it's very clear and uncluttered. It has a definite focus in the composition, while still being full of interesting objects.
@smceccarelli @Teju-Abiola - Finally making some progress on this piece again - much to do still (hands and drapery and textures)... but i think the pose and the wings are looking better? I'm feeling much happier with it - thanks again :)
